Donald Trump Impeached Again
-
He is now the only US president to be impeached twice.
So much winning!

@ttyymmnn So much winning!
Trump has now become the most impeached president in history. The calls for "healing" are just bullshit at this point. I think a Senate trial is a complete waste of time but this was definitely worth it to settle it in the house. Just quite the circus that is thankfully coming to a close soon! Sure the rabble rousers will keep shouting but I think it will get quieter as time goes on. I am scared about 2024 but if Biden does more than I expect, then maybe things will be better than I expect.
-
@ttyymmnn I've said this a lot on this channel lately.... lol

@wrong-wheel-drive Calls for healing would be a lot more compelling if they weren't coming from people who have recently been sticking knives in our democracy. They are welcome to start the healing by admitting they've been sowing division for personal political gain, and that they were wrong to do so.
-
Who knows if Chuck Todd actually knows anything, but he said if McConnell votes to convict (whenever that actually happens), that 12 would likely go along with him.
Alternately, Mitch probably wouldn't make that vote unless he knew he had enough to rid the party of Trump.
-
Congrats to Mr. Trump!
All he ever wanted to do was upstage President Obama. He's now achieved something Obama never came close to!
Amazing! Tremendous!

Exactly why it pains me so much to hear that crap from the republicans. Its just pandering to their trump supporter base. I try to think "lets hear both sides" and "how best can we all work together" but these past four years have pushed me further and further left. Even if I dont agree with all the policies, at least they arent literal terrorists. Republicans used to be the pro-America, support the troops party but theyve proven anything but that.

@wrong-wheel-drive Ten Republicans joined the Democrats to vote for impeachment. It's a start.

The first step toward healing is admitting that you have a problem.

He has already said that he would not lobby against conviction, but he has also said that he will not call a special session to bring Senators back before Jan 19. He's trying to have it both ways. He is in a very unenviable position entirely of his own making.
-
@wrong-wheel-drive It is all a waste of time. But if that's what they need to do to make the statement, so be it. The Donald made his bed and will have to lie in it. The only thing I'll be concerned about is healing partisan divide in the post-Trump era.
Remember that the Republican party isn't just the guys you see on the news. The nature of the news cycle is such that the loudest and most confrontational voices get the attention. You can still find traditional R values at the ground roots level. Vote issues and candidates, not party.
-
@chariotoflove I don't think it's a waste of time if, by convicting him in the Senate and preventing him from ever running for office again, it truly gets our country into the post-Trump era. If his disciples believe he has a chance to regain power at some point in the future, he'll be able to continue his long con and bleed even more money and free labor out of these people.
Trump Lost the 2020 Election. He Has Raised $207.5 Million Since.

@ttyymmnn let 'em do like the rest of us, set up a Zoom/Teams/GotoMeeting session. McConnell is intentionally dragging his feet

Need to make GRATUITOUS use of the mute button for some people on that call!
-
197 people I can’t fathom seeing eye to eye with. If 1/6 isn’t worth impeachment nothing is.
-
@wrong-wheel-drive Everyone is on mute, a moderator unlocks a person for a pre-determined amount of time (1 minute). It's not a stretch
-
@davesaddiction Not to mention it sets a terrible example for the future.
If you can’t impeach a President based on this, there’s no point in ever trying again.
-
@ttyymmnn .
I think the most important thing is for both parties in Congress to set the example that extremism doesn't help anyone, but that people's concerns about their country are being heard and acted on instead of dismissed. Remember that most people believe Congress is largely a useless bunch of bickering toddlers who already can't get anything done on time. Show them that's not true. You do that successfully, and no one will have incentive to listen to Trump or anyone like him. Trump was a symptom of a problem, not the cause of it.
Almost everything I see in this forum is focused on the person, mostly excoriating him and delighting in his downfall. I imagine a score of other websites of his followers similarly enraged but in the opposite direction. And all of it is a mistake. I'm already focused on looking past that.
I thought you did a good thing the other day asking about he future of the GOP. But extend that to the future of both parties and of the legislative environment in the future. And start talking about policy instead of personalities. I think about policy first and then vote candidates as vehicles to the policies.
-
@chariotoflove I think the general concern here is that Trump's demagoguery has created an untenable situation. His supporters are going to commit more acts of violence, and the only people with a chance of persuading them that the election was not stolen are other Republicans.
If the GOP isn't willing to, in larger numbers than they have done to this point, stand up against the violence, against the "stop the steal" lies, things will probably escalate.
So there is no "past this point" until there's wider acknowledgement of the fact that the election was not stolen, and that the GOP rank and file have been lied to by their party leaders.
Anyway, that's why there's "glee" here: because I, at least, don't think there is a way out of this hellhole without some consensus about what happened to the GOP under Trump. And that consensus won't arise without "truth & reconciliation", and truth can't wait.

Mmmm... I do love having more of that Impeachment Pie!
