Classic Ferrari Friday 365GTC/4
-
Another Classic Ferrari Friday post and this time another of my late father's old cars a 1972 365GTC/4. This was probably his favorite Ferrari to drive. It's a great GT car for the period, more comfortable and refined than the 'Daytona', with excellent storage space for a long weekend away and surprisingly effective a/c too.
Despite the similar name to the 365GTB/4 'Daytona' they share less than you might think mechanically, with different gearboxes, cylinder heads, carburetors and a more conventional wet sump setup being notable changes. Personally I prefer the excitement of the Daytona to the C4's refinement but there is not a huge amount in it.
Dad had a few mods done to the car most noticeably the colour coded front 'bumper' made in aluminum rather than the heavy rubber of the original. He also uprated the brakes to eliminate a soft feeling pedal (he actually had three different GTC/4's over the years and they all had a soft brake pedal), and added modern electronic ignition (US spec cars got the primitive Dinoplex electronic ignition while European cars used traditional points). Finally he preferred the look with the Ferrari 365GT 2+2 wheels so swapped a set of those on. All the mods were reversed when the car was sold.
Here's a pre mods pic.
As seen in the recent BaT auction and oppo game, these are amongst the lower priced classic Ferraris today. A combination of being a 2+2, high maintenance costs (the Daytona has much better under bonnet access which makes servicing slightly more affordable), and lack of knowledge conspire to keep prices down. They are however regarded as being one of the best sounding Ferrari V12's especially at idle.

Basically a very early fastback version of the 400 series (365 GT4 2+2/400i/412)
The 400i was the first automatic Ferrari

@dogisbadob pretty much, although it's lighter and has a shorter wheelbase so it is a more sporting car than the later versions.
