Dwellings of Oppo: Show Us Your Rad Pads

@Rusty-Vandura Eh, I think that it helps in a lot of cases, but it's dependent on who's actually running it. Always good to have the people who need to be managed be managed.

The HOA wasn't very happy with my son and I filling it up.
I loathe the very idea of HOA.
I kind of enjoyed the challenges and the wins. There is no maximum number of cars in our county nor in our bylaws in the subdivision. There is a rule in the subdivision, which I guess I signed up to when I bought the house, that says you can't have any disabled cars in your driveway.
So some of our cars perhaps, maybe, occasionally appear disabled. So twice they sent a letter:
So both times I immediately rounded up my son, scribbled the 'date received' on the letter, and filmed him driving each car out of the driveway and parking it in the street. At the start of each clip I panned across the letter so they knew it was a current video. Then I sent them a compressed version of the rolled up edited video the night after I received the letter. I requested acknowledgement that they received the video and concurrence with the non-violation. They couldn't argue they were disabled since I responded so quickly. Both times they surrendered.
My memory is a little fuzzy. We may or may not have had to do one or two hurry up repairs. But none-the-less, our vehicles were demonstrably not disabled.
My son bought a house back in December so his fleet has moved 10 minutes east of my house. So I have plenty of room to expand my fleet of, er, non-disabled cars.
Is Rusty up for bid yet?

Not yet. I have something like $4k in it, but probably couldn't get $4.00 for it.
You put more effort into responding to the HOA than I would have. I might have invited them to come over and go for a ride in one of the cars...

That's what the County is for. Never would I submit my freedom to an HOA. And indeed, one shouldn't say "should" and never say "never."

I guess HOAs are one of those situations where the good ones—working, with a sense of perspective, on what they should be doing and only that— do not call attention to themselves, and and you only hear about the bad ones. But bad ones can be emotionally and even financially burdensome.
My view of HOAs (never all bunnies and sunshine to begin with) was soured by being closely adjacent to a situation with a bad one—to be specific, a couple on its board who would literally walk around looking for the most picayune violations.
The tables were turned on them when they complained about a couple using the house as a VRBO part time. The meeting to address the complaint saw them backpedaling so hard it constituted aerobic exercise -- apparently a little bird said that they themselves were doing a very similar thing, and proof was readily available on the Internet.

Unfortunately sometimes you do need to manage folks. Mostly though they help maintain and organize the community’s will in deciding what to do with the common areas. We built playgrounds and gathering areas.
I think more problems ensue when HOAs hire management companies, which are more rules focused and less responsive to the community than when the board and officers are your neighbors.

@Chariotoflove For sure. I have fond memories of our first HOA, we did community days of gardening/maintenance. I once rented a truck and cleaned up under decks and stuff. Most people pitched in.
It was cheap housing, we were all poorer, but we did what we could ourselves.

@Rusty-Vandura I can't imagine buying a detached house in one either. I once lived in a condo which had a HOA by definition, but it was pretty hands-off - just organized maintenance issues. I suppose if one was operating a puppy mill or parking dozens of junked cars on community grounds, they'd take action, but I never saw anything done - meetings were all about approving contractor bids.
Around my neighborhood now, I don't care if someone has a purple door or doesn't mow their lawn once a week. The city will do something if it becomes abusive, like a real hoader house etc. A few houses from me there's an MG under a tarp in the driveway that's been there at least since the first street view images in 2007. I couldn't care less, although I know plenty of Karens and Kevins out there would lose their minds.

Detached house in an HOA: that's really what I am banging on about. I don't want to live in a warren, attached or detached.

@Noodles If you do projects like I do by the time you get done you will be really good at it! (and moving on to learning the next thing)
-
@Bloody-the-resident-LandRover-apologist that’s the best way, and also how I feel about boats even though I want another one.
-
@Jarrett I found an old picture of the kitchen. (Thanks wifey!)

My house is a dump, so here's my cat.
-
My first and only house. I had apartments and lived with my parents until I could afford it. Over 9 acres of land and surrounded by trees. Nice and quiet just the way I like.

@krustywantout Gorgeous!

@krustywantout damn, playa!

Having a house like that is stewardship more than ownership. If subsequent generations see something basically the same as what you bought, only better, that's the big win.

A few years ago where I live, somebody from Code Enforcement went around the (non HOA) neighborhood looking for trouble. He wrote up someone I know for, and I quote, "too many cars."
As it happens, this person's family usually has a total of six or seven cars -- a couple of modern daily drivers and several enthusiast/collector cars. We're not talking about derelicts or perma-projects visible from the street, either, nor lawn parking—and even those rules are honored mostly in the breach in this city. All were and are parked off street in his driveway and currently registered and in running condition, rather attractive in fact. Let me add that it is one of the pride-in-ownership properties on the block, and that the people who live there are no bother whatsoever.
Awkward: Although it has concerns about the condition and storage situation of visible cars, our city doesn't even have an ordinance about the allowable number of cars per person or dwelling. The inspector had no grounds to even bring up the matter, much less propose enforcement actions.
Not sure if he was an overenthusiastic newbie or just looking to make his quota in a "good guys are easier to chase and safer to catch" neighborhood, but I guess somebody said something to somebody, as the problem went away.

The new exhaust manifold is due in tomorrow.

Well it's a condo, nothing very interesting about it, but it has a nice view and we are close to a lot of beautiful places. I am pretty much tormented all day every day by the lack of garage and backyard.
-
Our "other" pad is much radder than the one we currently inhabit. Alas, Covid quarantine policy keeps us from going back.
The floor level isn't exactly high by local standards but the view is not too shabby.
-
@BeaterGT honestly, while I love my garage, I’d much rather have a view of the water… god I love beach living and fishing and swimming and walking on sand…

@415s30 Nice view. I’m getting strong California vibes for some reason, but can’t quite place it. The environment and construction reminds me of SoCal, but the trees say NorCal. Silicon Valley? Wine country? Walnut Creek-ish? All my SoCal ideas wouldn’t have large buildings like that near them, but it has a feel like some mountain communities as well.
