Shut up and take my money

Sometimes businesses make self-defeating technology decisions.
After 5 years and 100,000 miles, it’s time to replace the Mickey Thompsons that have served me so well on the LJ. (Yes, I also just bought tires for my WJ; yes, this is an expensive winter.)
I always default to Discount Tire; they’re convenient, they’re usually reasonably priced, they’ve mostly treated me well.
When I asked for suggestions for my WJ tires, the name that kept coming up was Falken, so this time I decided to give them a try. Went to the Discount Tires website, did some research, decided to go with less rigid tires this time because I’m older and more broken than 5 years ago...
And the website wouldn’t let me order them because they’re larger than stock, because a previous owner installed a lift.
I know a tire store doesn’t want me to make a mistake and waste a lot of their time installing tires that don’t fit, but for Pete’s sake, give me a checkbox that says “I know these are wrong, let me buy them anyway.”
Rather than try to find a bogus vehicle that used that size as stock (which might well be impossible) I just called the store, but seriously, Discount Tire, don’t stop me from spending money!
Flashback to December 2015. New tire days are good days. Look at that tread depth! Cavernous.
-
@just-jeepin you got 100k out of a set of tires? I was happy to get 20k out of the rears on the M3.
-
@e90m3 Yep. It helps that I’m religious about tire rotations, and that I do 5-tire rotations, but even with that I’m impressed these held up.
And if it weren’t winter, I could go another several months. The worst tire still is at 4/32”.
-
@just-jeepin Huh, thats weird with the website... I distinctly remember buying 295R18 for the fronts on my Vette from the website...the stock size is 265R17
-
Truck tires also tend to be significantly higher wear rated than a typical tire that would go on the back of an M3.
-
@e90m3 Much different animal! Can you even rotate the tires on an M3?

Even with an extra tire giving you extra mileage all the way around the (quick) maths still only work if the tire life was supposed to be 75,000 plus. And that still only gets you over 90K.
Are your tires supposed to be done at a deeper tread depth than normal?
Or do you use chains for a portion of the time?
I have questions, but no knowledge on how this wizardry works. Do deep truck tires just come in higher mileage ranges? -
@ibrad Oh I know it, it was more for juxtaposition. You can't as it's not a square set, I run 245s in the front and 265s in the rear.
-
Is shopping by size on discounttire.com not an option like it is on Tire rack?
-
100k is mind blowing. Looking forward to reviews and updates on the Falkens as you get seat time with them.
It wasn't until the last few years I could get more than 20k out of a set - but I can't possibly be the problem ;). I did get 40-50k out of my last 3 sets of Yokohama Geolanders (1x HT, 2x AT) on the Dakota though. Be curious how long these Duratracs go on the ZR2.

I know! I run 275/245 on my E55 and yes, after about 25k kms they should be replaced on the rear.
On my 4runner I run "C" load rated wrangler duratracs and I think I've got 100k kms on them already and still going strong. They cost less than the supersports too!
-
@just-jeepin @Future-Next-Gen-S2000-Owner Discount Tire is much easier to navigate if you go “by size” and say “continue without vehicle.” None of my tires I run on my Camaro or MR2 are listed as compatible in their system, but they fit just fine and my local Discount Tire has never had any trouble installing them.
-
Guys, he meant 100,000 cm. It’s not that impressive.
Kidding aside, AT/MT have butt loads of tread. Had he had 10 or 8/32nds like a typical tire, it would have not been such a long wear window.
-
@adversemartyr @e90m3 @LooseonExit as @derpwagon mentioned, truck tires are generally much higher wear rating than those for cars. My dad's 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 that he bought new has ~65k miles on it, and he just finally replaced the tires it came with last year and only due to age, not wear.
I am not surprised that properly inflated, rotated, aligned, and under worked truck tires last that long. Think of it this way...that Wrangler weighs half of what a 3/4 ton diesel might weigh, yet the tire needs to be able to handle both. And that's not even factoring in the payload that needs to be accounted for too.

Not quite sure what you mean here. Do you mean do they start out with deeper tread depth? Definitely more than typical passenger car tires, as you can see from the photo.
The general recommendation is to replace them when they get to around 3/32" of remaining tread depth. They started (per the specs, I didn't measure) at 18.5/32".
Or do you use chains for a portion of the time?
No, the winters here (sadly) never reach the point where I'd need chains.

@HammerheadFistpunch and others have more knowledge than I do in this particular; this is only my 3rd set of light truck tires.
Mickey Thompson offers a 45k mile limited warranty on these tires, which gives you a sense of how much confidence they have in them.
-
@italianjobr53 Per others, it appears I simply chose the wrong path to search for my tires.
-
@derpwagon Incidentally, since I couldn't reply to your locked thread...
The "remind everyone to continue to be excellent" post makes for an interesting juxtaposition with the threatening kitchen knife in your avatar.
-
@e90m3 and you both slaughter the 5k miles I get out of a set of bike tires o.o
Oh, and if I go to the track, that 5k miles becomes more like 500 lol
-
@just-jeepin Warranties don't always mean much. My Continental DWS had a 40k or 50k warranty but they were still ready to be replaced by 25k even with proper rotations. I did get prorated pricing on new tires based on the wear due to the warranty but they would be completely bald by 30k if I continued to run them
Seondarily, are you running wildpeak A/Ts now? I have a set on my gladiator and they have been great so far, save for an unexpected incident with some mud that packed them up
-
@mastermario
LT tires will usually have long treadwear ratings than the P metric versions of the same tire. Tread depth and compound is a big part of this. The P metrics of course have weaker sidewalls as well, but obviously not related to wear. I believe Falkens have some of the deepest blocks of AT tires. Those Mickey's he had on before have some serious depth to them however.I used to be pretty abusive with tires as they were free. I also owned a bunch of Dakotas which are very good at eating tires via junk front ends lol. Mostly P metric versions though.
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold I just ordered them, hopefully installed tomorrow.
My history:
- Bought the LJ with well-worn Mickey Thompson MTZ tires, lasted a year and a half
- Replaced them with MT ATZ P3s, which I still have
- Bought the WJ with some cheap tires which honestly I don't remember. Rubber was old enough to warrant immediate replacement.
- Replaced them with BF Goodrich KO2s, which seem fine

You got 20k out of rear tires on an M3? Either you are doing it wrong or I am! lol
Lucky to get 12k out of mine. -
@haveacarortwoorthree I’d go broke. I assume yours are cheaper than mine? These were $800-something, well over $1k with tax and their road hazard warranty (but that’s also for 5).
-
@just-jeepin I usually just call my local Discount Tire anyway as the store has a much better idea of inventory and availability than their web site does. My local discount has been hands down my favorite tire and wheel shop for the past few years. They just do what I want and there is no fuss or upselling.
