Ouch! (Update)
-
Well, earlier this evening my wife made a slight judgment error a block from our house. She was going about a kilometer away, and as she turned the corner at the end of the street she noticed our dog was standing on the seat, and not laying down because a bag was on the seat.
My wife grabbed the bag mid turn while looking at the road, but somewhere in there she forgot to straighten the wheel, and turned into the concrete pole on the edge of the road. At most I would think she was doing 15 kph.
She for certain took out the headlight, bumper and quarter panel. I can't quite tell if she damaged underneath that. It looked like she possibly got the corner of frame (subframe?) under there. I don't know how it is supposed to look so I can't say much. It would be bumper attachment and plastic wheel arch attached under there I think.
We'll try and get an estimate tomorrow on it. I'm wondering if I can find the parts off Goo-net for cheap and replace it, but not quite certain what it will need.
Hopefully there will be a second stimulus here as they just declared another state of emergency this evening.Everyone is fine, and my wife has learned to stay focused on driving. As a driver who has very little time behind the wheel still it's pretty normal for this to happen.
Update: Took it to the garage nearby where we did the Shaken in November, and they are saying that it would be at least 200,000 Yen (about $2000) for the repairs. They said by all means that they would need to pull/straighten some of the structure underneath. In the light I can see that where the quarter panel is attached has probably been pushed a slight amount.
They are mentioning that perhaps some steering components might be damaged as well, but I'm pretty certain that isn't the case, it would more be a matter of the mounting point inside the structure. That's a lot of potential damage for as slow as she had to be going.
She had to have stopped completely because it's a blind corner (like almost every corner in a neighborhood in Japan), and the post is literally just over a car length from the corner. Think the tightest radius the car could arc through, and that's where the concrete pole is in the edge of the road. So she hit it just perfectly to miss any actual bumper, and the bumper support/ structure for the quarter panel is what stopped her.
We're probably just going to look into a different car, just from a time to fix standpoint. We're both too busy for me to take the hours to repair the car even if I can do the work.

@adversemartyr Oof. That's not going to buff out. It is a common color on a common car though so you may be able to find the parts already painted and install them yourself. It could have been a lot worse.

@adversemartyr Ouchies....at least the car can probably be easily repaired and is still usable!
-
@whoistheleader Yeah, I've just been looking at Goo-net's used parts area, and it's about $200 for the bumper, $60-150 for the headlight assembly, and $90-200 for the quarter panel. Since it's an old fairly beat up car anyway it looks like about $400 for the parts.

@rallydarkstrike I hope so. The problem I am starting to see is that it might require the windshield to be removed or at least unsealed.
At the very least the small side window has to come out.Actually, I went out and looked at the car, and maybe the glass doesn't attach to it. It might sit next to the glass. Which would make more sense. It might just be black plastic trim that goes over the places I was thinking glass went.

@adversemartyr Glad that the wife is ok! Live and learn!
Also, I dont think that it would've damaged the subframe...maybe the crash support/bunper support. -
@italianjobr53 That would make sense to me. I just don't know what the support structure under there is, and if it is welded in or bolted together.
Welded would be a problem for me. Bolted is doable if it needs replaced. -
