@cb yikes, is that considered classic rock now? Definitely remember when that song first came out...

Gets played at Kroger. Once you're grocery store, you're classic rock. Blitzkreig Bop too, sorry Ramones, that's not punk. Also C&C Music Factory. And Fiona Apple. Also metal and some song else that was considered very racy in the 90s I don't remember. The wife is younger than me but that song came on and I shot her a look and an "Oh shit, I'm old now. Goddammit.' comment.

@misterbuttercup What is "classic rock"? When I was a teenager back in the 80's, classic rock was anything from the 60's. Even in 1987, a song from 1972 could be considered "classic rock" even though it was only 15 years old. Do we define it by the time since the song was released or by the era in which it was released?

This album came out in 1999, so it's almost 22 years old. A song that old in the 80's or 90's would clearly be considered "classic rock".

I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

@looseonexit Whoever is in charge of audio at my local Frys is into some good ‘90s alt rock. Last time I was in there Third Eye Blind’s “Jumper” was playing. Definitely not what I was expecting.

@roadkilled I guess I thought "Classic rock" was anything 20-25+ years old? It's weird to me that they were playing songs only 15 years old as classic rock, but also, while the sound of rock changed vastly between 72 and 87, the core listener base wouldn't have changed much I don't think, so maybe they took advantage of the change in sound to try and get more listeners?

@misterbuttercup Honestly seems like it probably should be. Though I feel maybe standards shift in the same way that a lot of people have a hard time calling a mid-'90s car a classic car, even though in the early '80s, I'm pretty sure you'd definitely consider a mid-'50s car a classic.

What do Classic Rock radio stations play these days? Do Classic Rock radio stations still exist?

Looking at Amazon's curated Top 50 Classic Rock songs: https://www.amazon.com/Top-Prime-Songs-Classic-Rock/dp/B08G1VPTQJ
It looks like they are mostly '70s songs with a few earlier and later (and I didn't see anything later than the mid-'80s)

@facw my local classic rock station added 90s songs around 2013.

Personally, I don't think you should call it "classic" because it's not the correct era. Music in specific styles in specific eras and regions have names, so this doesn't meet any of the requirements for classic rock.

@facw agreed. Just using back to the Future as the example, it's much easier to call the 50s "classic" from the 80s than for us to call the 80s classic in 2021.

Would be interesting to see what the cutoff is, as @interstate366 mentioned, they really don't play many songs from the 90s on classic rock stations. The one in my area plays 60s, 70s, 80s, and a few Nirvana songs from the 90s, but nothing past that

@facw We just need more terms. I think of 80s-90s cars as "Retro," and anything from the 70s or earlier as "Classic." Although I think some organizations define 25+ year-old cars as "classic," 45+ year-old cars as "antique," and anything from 1932 or earlier as "vintage."

Maybe there should be a "Rad Rock" radio station that exclusively paly music from offers
