Seriously smoke detector?
-
I didn't even burn my dinner! I don't need you yelling EVACUATE!!!!!!!!!!!!! over and over and over! Especially when you are on a high ceiling and I can't reach you! And apparently you needed very long press on the silence button (why is this a thing, no one is going to accidentally turn off a smoke detector?).
In any event, I hope my ears recover someday...
Local firetruck for your time (thankfully, while wired, the smoke alarm didn't set off the building fire alarm system and summon these guys):
-
@facw smoke alarm? You mean the dinner bell.
-
@longtime-lurker It did actually go off after I was done cooking, and just about to sit down to eat.
-
@facw I live in one of a group of 50 townhomes clustered together. The smoke alarms the builder used are extremely sensitive and it is imperative to use the range hood when cooking on the stove. I learned the hard way shortly after moving in. It took a few weeks to learn what windows to open when cooking to avoid setting off the smoke alarms.
On the other hand, I always know when somebody new has moved into one of the townhomes. Every few months, there is the sound of a smoke detector going off at dinner time.

@roadkilled I did have the fan on, but it's a pretty pathetic little thing (despite being quite loud). In the past I've opened the windows, but it's cold out today. Also our windows are quite restricted in how far they open (though I've removed some window guards so I can open them fully).
-
@facw I feel your pain. A while back my alarm company made the "fun" decision to start calling the fire station before they call you you. Shut that shit down real quick.
Anyway, time to get a Fing-Longer I guess...
-
@akioohtori I did try silencing it with a ski pole, but couldn't get it to stop. After opening the windows I went back with something to stand on, and was able to get it off the ceiling so I could work with it more easily (though didn't dare unplug the wires for fear I would set off something more), and eventually got it to shut up.
-
@facw Very frequently when I move my tractors around in the garage or out of the garage the CO alarm goes off and won't shut up. It almost got smashed off the ceiling last time!
