Hey...

You might have a leak, not sure. Probably need to check that.
-
@patbateman only one leak? It could be more...
-
@patbateman a leaky BMW? NEVER
-
@patbateman moments earlier:
-
That's not a leak so much as exsanguination. Yikes!
-
I think he pulled into that spot shortly after I left in my truck

From the dribbly lines leading in and the emerging puddle, I think he found an obstacle with his oil pan on the way in. TBD if the owner is aware, and unlikely to notice it if not. A new engine is likely after ignoring the warning lights for a while.

Did that with coolant once. Well, twice. Same car.
First time I had a line fall out of its clip and into the fan. I was alarmed at the amount of steam coming from the hood of my car when I looked up.
Second time I was in a tow yard helping a friend get parts from a totaled car (135i manual, not his fault). Smelled coolant but hey, it's a tow yard. Started to leave and saw a trail behind me. A plastic nipple joining 2 lines had snapped and I was tossing coolant all over the place, but it happened after I had stopped (no trail to the car from the drive in). Replaced it with a brass one.

@patbateman The owner was probably trying to adjust his air pressure.

My truck lost its coolant while doing 65 on the highway. The bottom radiator hose burst, so there was no coolant smell or steam to alert me of the problem. The thermostat was located away from the block, so there wasn't even a visual indication on the dash to warn me of impending doom. I realized there was a problem when the head warped and it started running like it had ingested a small bucket of bolts.

@bicyclebuck Yikes, that's a bad time. I managed to not do any damage at least and was only out the cost of a few parts. Not particularly expensive ones either, even with the OEM line I bought to replace the cut one (some tape did a good enough job while I waited, along with a constant check on coolant level)

It wasn't as bad as the second time. We had someone surface the head, replace the hoses, and put it all back together again, but it kept getting hot. I told my mom multiple times that it was still getting too hot, but she didn't listen. Then on one fateful trip home from school, it overheated a second time, warping the head again. My mom was prepared to trade me in for a different kid. When she had it towed to a different mechanic, he discovered that the new thermostat was faulty. That was the only thing that kept me from getting skinned alive.

@patbateman The angry bimmer wet itself.
-
@patbateman Well that sucks.
-
@carsoffortlangley There was a trail of oil drops down the street, as far as I could see. That’s gonna be a pricey repair bill.
-
@mm54 The trail of VERY LARGE oil drops were evident all the way down the road, as far as I could see.
-
@krustywantout Shoulda used a digital gauge.

Kersplosion in 3 ... 2 ...
-
@patbateman Some newer BMWs have a plastic oil pan (asshole Germans). Someone must have hit some road debris.
-
@patbateman That parking job is so good it makes me wonder if credit goes to the owner, or a tow truck driver...
