Christmas phone arrived
-
For my Christmas gift (from my wife) I used Ebay to procure a new to me 2020 iPhone SE 128g. It cost me just about $320 with the import fees and shipping.
I just need to switch the SIM over after letting it copy from my other phone all day.
I'm moving up from a 6S that over the last couple of months has developed an ever increasing battery issue with it sometimes saying it has 50% left in the tank, and then shuts down (usually when opening an app that has been idling in the background). If it turns itself on again it will show 3-5% battery, and then crash as soon as the unlock code is entered.
So it's time to switch the SIM over and enjoy remembering passwords that for some reason didn't make the transition. -
@adversemartyr same phone as mine.

@adversemartyr Nice! I wish someone would make a good small Android phone. I had an iPhone 6s, and it was fine, but I didn't like the operating system.
-
@shop-teacher Samsung S10e! Ive been using it for the past year or so...its pretty decent
-
@adversemartyr My fiancรฉe and I got on the same plan last week as her parents were kicking her off. Verizon was running a buy one get one free, so we both got iPhone 12s. I upgraded from an 8, and I can tell the camera is a lot better. I'm not missing the home button, which is the reason I got the 8 over the X back in 2017.
-
@shop-teacher I'm just too lazy to mess with getting everything sorted out on an Android phone, and an SE fits in the case I already have.
-
@e90m3 Nice. If I was on a plan system that offered phones on installment I might have gone with a 12, but the difference in price here in Japan between the Cell companies that offer the phones with the plans are so much more expensive than the bring your own phone ones here.
-
@adversemartyr If it works for you, go with it
-
@adversemartyr My wife has a 6S that will go completely flat if left unplugged overnight. It needs a new battery, but it doesn't make any sense to put any money at all into a such an old phone. I can't get her one of these, though. My boys and I are all rocking 8's, and she can't have a better phone than me!
-
@ttyymmnn Heh. I have a iPhone 5S for my work phone, still chugging along.
The plan was to update my personal, my work, and my wife's personal phones all in November 2020 as they are all 5-6 years old. With COVID and 5G phones coming online, we decided to wait until November 2021 when hopefully the 5G phones from 2020 will be discounted. (My usual strategy: buy one year old tech when the new stuff is being pushed for Christmas.)
I've been using an Apple phone for work because that is what they gave me to start with, and I've been going with the assumption that it is easier for interface with company apps like Office email, etc. But I'm happy with Android for personal use (currently a Galaxy S7).
Any phone enthusiasts who have helpful insights are welcome to provide input.

but I didn't like the operating system
I feel this is a big reason why a lot of people don't make major phone changes. The last time I played around on an android, I hated it. I'm sure I could eveeeentually acclimate to it, but the transition is a huge turn-off.
-
@flatisflat I have a Samsung as my personal phone and an iPhone 8 as a work phone....I hate the apple UI, nevermind the lack of some basic features
-
@adversemartyr Good pick. We got one for my MIL, and sheโs been living the combo of functionality and size.

I loved mine until someone stole it from right off my desk.

Neither am I any longer. At least now my building is now no longer a clinical building with unfettered access.

@ttyymmnn I almost went with an 8, but the price difference I was finding for a used 8 was not much less than for this SE; so I didn't see a good reason to come so close, but not bother with a bit more expense, and be almost current.

Agreed, but Iโve had this 8 for a while now. I bought it used to replace my 5S.
-
@adversemartyr Iโd say that was wise. The 8 was a good value, but the jump in processor means the SE is future proofed longer.
