Interesting home for sale...

Excerpt from the listing:
"Many recent renovations to the house over the years including radiant floor heat in most of the first level, insulation, some replacement windows, chimney, newer heating system, and the dormer has been repaired over the jail. "Wait, what?

This actually made the rounds of The News but I could see how you might have missed it...

That isn’t even the the same jail home I was thinking of that I found out about in 2020. Apparently there’s at least two out there. Why?

@looseonexit call it period charm? Most probably cos that much steel embedded in concrete would be a mother to remove...
Handy for excessively drunk guests I imagine -
@functionoverfashion I'd make it a novelty B&B ("Come spend the night in jail!") but on the other hand, 28'X40' could fit a buncha project cars...
That window makes me irrationally angry though. You know the one.
-
@functionoverfashion Change jail to sex dungeon and bring in a whole new group of buyers.
-
@essextee it seemed like a normal old house that was a real patchwork of different eras and then I saw the jail. And that window. Both made me irrationally angry.
-
@whoistheleader Are you referring to the witch window?
-
@kiltedpadre PLEASE, NO!
-
I don't know, looks like it could be fun. Wonder how soundproof that part of it is?
-
This is so much worse than anything else I saw.
-
@kiltedpadre wow
-
@dr-zoidberg I'm not sure if I'm more upset at the window angle ...or the window molding being cut off by the ceiling.
-
@flatisflat it's not even that it's cut off, it's that it's got a decorative geometric pattern that's cut off.

It's the style of the ceiling fan, the tassels on the ceiling fan and the likelihood that the window moulding was decapitated by a dunce who really wanted a flat ceiling upon which to mount a particularly hideous and probably ineffective style of ceiling fan that does me in.

Seems like it would sell for more if they just walled over the entrances to the jail and didn't even let buyers know it was there (illegal?).

I would keep the jail cells... they're part of the house's history. Could probably use the cells for secure storage.
And looking at all the pictures, the place needs work in other areas before doing anything about the jail.
-
@manwich Kinda hard to hide a 28' x 40' space, too...
But just the fact that it's there takes it off the list of so many prospective buyers.
Seems like quite a bargain for someone who doesn't care.

I do know that window, I see a fair amount of them up here actually. Older houses that now want ventilation in the half-story upstairs... yeah I do not approve but they are definitely function over fashion.

That's the part that gets me, I see quite a few windows like that around here actually - see my reply to Zoidberg

I guess they used to have small jails where the Sherriff would live there. One day they just stopped using them but it wasn't that long ago - 1969 in the case of the one I posted. It might not have changed hands that many times since then, and would be a costly renovation to remove an interesting bit of history. Still, seems like a liability more than an interesting bit of history.

@functionoverfashion I can't figure out where the angled window is. It doesn't show up in any of the exterior photos. Maybe it's to another dimension?
-
@functionoverfashion I love the crooked window. I would gladly live in that house/jail
-
@mastermario I thought the same thing. I kinda want to see it from the outside.
