DOTS: Rainy Day Emissions Testing
-
Emissions tested my car and my dad's truck today. Georgia's emissions testing is pretty lax but it's still required. Anyways, the cheapest place in town has this colorfully hand painted old Chevy S10.
It's painted with folksy phrases, amusing drawings, and pop culture icons. What's your favorite thing written here? You may have to open it in a new tab to zoom in on the uncompressed image.
It's a pretty good way to draw some business.
They also had a pretty clean looking Fiero on its factory rims sitting around. Neat. It's easily the most interesting vehicle there, though the shorty Chevy Van is at least uncommon.
And on the way back, a very cool bright blue Chevelle. Definitely a GM theme today.

GM theme day!

@whoistheleader Huh, you guys have to pay for it? In the Ohio counties that have e-check, you used to go to a oil change shop and pay them then get reimbursed when you submitted paperwork, or just go to a state-operated e-check facility and it would carry no cost.
-
@qaaaaa Yup, out of pocket, though it isn't too bad once a year. You're paying for it either way, just one way it passes through a lot more hands.
-
@italianjobr53 Nice! Though a Fiero is a whole different side of GM than the Corvette. I approve of the color scheme going on here.
-
How much is it though?
-
@jb-boin it was $16 a pop and you'd definitely know if it was going to fail before driving there. Pretty much anything will pass with ease.
-
@qaaaaa The places I've lived (New York, Texas, and Massachusetts), you have to pay for inspections (all of the above do both emissions and safety, though generally only urban counties in Texas do emissions). Normally not expensive though, I'm pretty Massachusetts sets a fixed rate.
For emissions though I would much prefer a move to roadside sensors in lieu of an annual inspection. Catch problems quicker, make fraud harder, and lower the burden on car owners. Sadly doing roadside safety inspections is harder, you could probably do tires and lights, but brakes, rust, suspension components, etc. would require considerably more complicated computer vision.
-
@facw I'm not against inspections and I don't mind paying for them, but mine is pretty inconsequential. It's pretty much just checking for emissions compliance and bro truck owners can either bribe or just live in non emissions counties.

"HOME OF THE BIG CHICKEN" ftw.

You just reminded me I should probably do the same. Florida doesn't require emissions tests, so I just haven't gotten them, but Maryland does and since I have MD plates, and I'm back home, I may as well get that done.
