Time for another Jeep shuffle
-
For the second time in two months, I'm taking one Jeep to the shop to retrieve the other one.
Nov/Dec: Replace all of the rear brake components in the WJ.
Dec/Jan: Replace serpentine belt, A/C, heater core in the LJ, plus some other miscellaneous maintenance
Jan/Feb (anticipated): rear main seal oil leak, oil pressure gauge, suspension, bushings, possibly failing transmission, front-end noises (possibly failing front diff/driveshaft) in the WJ.
(Thank goodness for extended warranties.)
Really I need three Jeeps if I want to make sure one is always functional. #unnecessaryjeepshoppingwithjj

@just-jeepin man - Every time I think about picking up a Jeep as my adventure rig you make another post about yours' mechanical mishaps.
-
@just-jeepin Do you get Stockholm syndrome from owning older high mileage jeeps?
-
@just-jeepin I always wonder "why?" when I see you and other Jeep masochists post about the constant flow of issues. Good luck to you and your wallet.
-
@jminer Other than damage I caused directly by off-roading my 07’ Wrangler never had a single issue. I mean it had TONS of issues total, but all based on stuff I did to it. Can only smash parts off rocks so many times before something has an issue. But never had a “defect” of any kind from 2007-2013.

It must be a Jeep Thing because I sure don't understand
-
@jminer my user name is what it is for a reason... just had the discussion with my wife last week that a used German sports car would probably cost the same as my TJ over time. But, sunk cost fallacy and my love for all Jeeps TJ-era and earlier mean that I am trapped in this abusive relationship. If you want one, find a one owner one that never saw salt.
-
@just-jeepin sorry to hear that. Mine decided to throw coolant on the floorboard again last week. This is the third heater core since this time last year. I’m throwing in the towel and letting my mechanic figure out what the hell is happening. Has to be electrolysis but I’m not chasing that rabbit myself.
-
@jeepoftheseus they had to take apart my dash twice because the first evap core had a big crack in it. Quality in manufacturing, clearly.
Took 5 weeks to get it back. Expecting the WJ to be there at least that long. Had another problem arise on the way in, probably because it was so cold: loud clunking noise in steering every time I turned it several degrees in either direction.
-
@just-jeepin woof, well here’s to hoping is less than five weeks.
-
@just-jeepin
Is that a Jeep Patriot I see?
-
@manwich Yep, I widened the photo to make sure I caught it for you

Does that mean you're coming around to some of my suggestions?

I seriously considered buying a new Jeep LJ in '06, instead of my Sierra. Occasionally I used to wonder if I'd made the wrong call. This spring JustJeepin' shared how much he'd spent on maintenance and repairs on it in I believe it was five years. I won't give the number out, in case he regrets sharing it, but it was staggering. It's multiples higher than I have spent on my Sierra in the entire 15 years I've owned it.
-
Sounds about right. I go off the Jeep scale of "Can I live with it?"
Steering making a clunking noise when turning the wheel? I'll look at at the next oil change.
Interior panel fell off? Is it cracked? Eh, I'll get some glue next week.
Engine is overheating on trips longer than 15 minutes? Guess I don't need to go out that far...
-
@just-jeepin Or you could buy one vehicle that isn't redacted for being too mean known for being unreliable, breaky (that's a technical term), and expensive.
-
@shop-teacher yeah, but where's the soul? The heart? The fear that it could all wrong at any moment so you live for now!

The soul and the heart are both in the shop, of course.
-
you are fixing your jeeps too much. they like to be 10-15% broken at all times, and run best this way.
-
@adamftw Trust me, they've never dropped below 20% busted.

The suspense is what makes me feel alive!

I prefer to stay alive by being able to reliably get where I'm going ... but you do you I guess!

@just-jeepin Rear main seal? That's pretty much any vehicle over 10 years old. Unless you're already having it all taken apart for some reason, or it's gushing oil versus simply seeping, that is a hell of an expense.
