Back to The Mill tomorrow

Tomorrow my district is resuming in-person schooling, in a hybrid model. I can't say I feel great about the procedures and protocols my district has implemented, but I've been so depressed teaching on Zoom that I can't help but be happy about it anyways. Lets just say if I were to dare say that in my union's Facebook group, I wouldn't be very popular.
I almost didn't get to join the kids tomorrow. Friday morning, my 5-year old woke up vomiting (clear/phlegm). She was fine after a bath and some breakfast, and never had a fever. We called her out of school, but she insisted on doing her homework.
Unfortunately for her, I still had to drag her to the doctor for either an alternate diagnosis or a negative covid test, so Daddy could go to work on Monday.
The doc was unable to give an alternate diagnosis, and though we both knew damn well she was fine, we had to give her a covid test. The kiddo, as usual, was a total trooper. No complaining, no crying, and happy to get a sucker (she also asked for a second sucker, so her big sister could have one).
I've been treading water all weekend while awaiting results, because I didn't know if I would be able to be in the building or not. The test came back negative tonight. I let the powers that be know, and started making plans to not be in the building, because I figured it was too late.
At almost 9:00 local time, I got clearance to go into the building tomorrow. I am very glad I don't have to endure the torture of teaching my kids on zoom, while 40% of them are in my shop without me.
Worst kitchen appliance ever, for your time.

The kid is braver than I am. Better human being too. I would've kept the second sucker for myself.

@shop-teacher Good luck tomorrow - glad the kid wasn’t sick with COVID.

Thanks! Me too. I really wasn't worried about it, because we haven't been anywhere or seen anyone.

This is awesome.
My kids are staying virtual, but we actually get a snow day tomorrow. The district canceled classes.
Here in Texas, we are struggling with community infection rates that are now higher than the summer spike, and hospitalizations that are high enough to trigger the governor's mandate to restrict restaurants, bars, etc. The AG will probably sue to overturn them, since people say they are unconstitutional. My boys were hoping to start going in to school for band practice, but that is on hold. Of course, HS sports will continue unabated. The University Interscholastic League, which governs all extracurricular activities, has said that sports must continue but All State Band cannot. Priorities, I guess.
This whole situation is just so unfortunate. Hopefully things will turn around soon.
Also, I'm pretty sure that kitchen appliance is in no danger of starving.
-
@ttyymmnn That's hilarious to me that you're having a snow day. Having seen your pictures this morning, that amount of snow here is the equivalent of "No" to the question, "Did it snow?"
I'm betting we'll never take one of those again. We'll likely have e-learning days instead.
The infection rate is 3-1/2 times higher here than the level where we are supposed to be full remote, but the school board has run out of fucks to give. My union and the support staff's union have both filed unsafe labor practice charges. Things have gotten ugly. It's a contract year too, soooooo .... Yeah.

And Texans are real pussies about it too. You get a little wintry mix on the road, and they not only start talking about snow days and delayed starts, they freak out like everyone will die on the roads.

We're just not equipped to deal with much of anything down here. TBH, I'm surprised the district called it as early as they did. A couple of years ago, they canceled classes at night and we all awoke to bright sunny skies and temps in the 60s. The district had a lot of egg on their faces. Austin ISD (we are in a neighboring district) announced that all classes would be virtual tomorrow. No reason why our district couldn't have done the same.
My oldest took three stitches in his finger on Friday from playing with a pocket knife, and I had an interesting talk with the ER nurse. She predicted that we would be wearing masks for three years. Three. Years. I hope she's wrong. At least the first year is almost behind us.
Hang in there.

I so glad you get to to back in, but sad that you don’t feel entirely safe doing so. The great thing about my daughter’s school is that they are doing everything they can to keep in person school going, but at the same time make us and the teachers feel that they have our backs and that safety comes first. Yeah, I like to bitch about the high tuition but they are running a class act.
-
@ttyymmnn three stitches isn't bad at all glad the damage wasn't too serious.
On 3 years, my wife said something similar. Between the logistical nightmare of vaccinating all, a large percentage hesitant to get it, variations in the disease and everything else it'll be a long 2021 at the very least.

@shop-teacher
I'm sure you being in school is going to be greatly appreciated by the kids who have missed being at school.
Here schools are pretty much closed everywhere.
Thankfully the BBC has stepped up for those without computers or the internet to provide National Curriculum teaching for 5-7, 7-9 and 9-11, 11-12, 12-13 and 13-14 year olds vie TV programming.
Take care at school but also enjoy yourself.I think Hammer is doing it wrong, I was told that the cat sat on the mat, not lay on the mat.

Man, some people. Family of 4, and there's more food stuffed in the mini fridge than would take to feed a town!
-
@shop-teacher GLad the test turned out negative for your kiddo and she's feeling better.....hopefully it stays that way! Good luck being back in the classroom, however brief each class may be!
Also, yay Hammer tummies!
-
@ttyymmnn I know y'all aren't equipped for it, so it's different ... But I can't help but laugh nonetheless.
I hope that nurse is wrong too!
-
@chariotoflove I feel ok for myself, as I don't have any elevated risk factors, but we have over 150 teachers in our district who do, and who had to choose a years unpaid sabbatical, to quit, or to suck it up and work anyways. The district has proved itself to be unscrupulous about previous outbreaks within the schools. They do not have our backs.
-
@svend We were hybrid for about a month in the fall. I had zero behavior issues with students, because they were all so happy to be there. I expect things will be the same, at least for a while.
Hammy never met a mat that he wouldn't lay on.

Oh yeah, my classes are only 25 minutes long this time around. That'll make it interesting.

Man, some schools around here in Wisconsin wait way too long to call off school. I went to a private high school and it was about a 40 minute drive for me on a good day. There were 2 times where I was almost to school before they called it off since I would leave earlier than usual to account for bad traffic. It was annoying to say the least not to mention completely negates the point of a snow day.

@shop-teacher
My friends district kept pushing full return AFTER thanksgiving, and then again after christmas break. These memes would be funny if they weren't so accurate. the teachers union called in the health board, who stepped in and shut that plan down. -

That's the truth. THey're only good for cleaning up spills, and creating them.
-
@shop-teacher Yeah, not sure how you can accomplish anything in 25 minutes in a shop class
Good luck!
-
@ttyymmnn Can't stop footbaw! That, and can't stop middle aged adult living vicariously through children. We must think of what's most important.

All my instruction is on videos I made ahead of time, so they can watch those ahead of time, and get right to work. It's a lot of prep work, but it actually works out really well.
