Lady today either really didn’t like me, or she just really trusted her dog
-
So today, the family goes up to the acute rehab facility to visit my mother in law. We can’t go inside, so we have to visit at the window outside. As my wife and I are standing in the parking lot, a woman walks by with a beautiful, large Shiloh Shepherd. She says he dog is super friendly and has been missing interacting with people due to COVID, and asks if we’d like to pet him. My wife gives him some scratches, then he walks over to me. I let him sniff, then I get down and give him some scratches. I pet the pup for a good 3-4 minutes while my wife and the lady chat. Happy pupper.
As we separate, the lady says “you must have really good character, normally he doesn’t like men”. I look back at the 140 or so pound dog, thankful he didn’t rip my face off when I pet him.

She says that to every guy.
-
@huzer She was hitting on you bro, you got it!
-
@highlander Cougar town! She had me by a good 20 years.
-
@vincentmalamute Damnit, now I don’t feel special.
-
@huzer When Bruno died, we looked into Shiloh shepherds. Places we found wanted $2500-3500 per puppy, and you only got to be a co-owner of the pup. Needless to say, we stopped looking at those. They are gorgeous dogs though.
Glad you’re in one piece.
-
@huzer Sounds like she doesn't like men, but the dog turned out alright anyway.

oops, sorry! My Rin (my wolfy looking Malamute) likes leaning on people we meet.
If you ever meet Rin, she'll lean on you and I'll tell you that you're special because she doesn't do that with anyone else!

@musashi66 I always have to think when I learn of a breed I haven’t heard of, they are expensive. I just have a boring, run of the mill Aussie. Although he is a good pup.
-
@vincentmalamute My dog will get really excited and shake his butt until it’s about ready to fall off. We at least have him trained not to jump, which is tough for an Aussie, since that’s part of what they’re bred to do.

These ladies out here being horny on main

@forsweden Cute fluffy animals are the best way to pull chicks. Or guys depending.
@Huzer Rescue animals are the best!

The standing joke in our house when heading out for a walk is “ want to take the chick-magnet?”

hahaha!! I do specifically take Rin if I go to a bar with dogs allowed on their patio.

Our last 3 dogs have been rescues, 2 from organizations and 1 that my wife and son themselves rescued from Texas Motor Speedway. The latter turned out to be a Patterdale Terrier, a breed I had never heard of until we were walking the dog in our 'hood one day and a woman stopped to ask us where we had found a Patterdale. We thought she was just a mutt that someone had dumped or lost after a NASCAR race.
Our new neighbors, OTOH, have two Golden Retrievers they got from a breeder. The puppy that they just got has serious vision issues, and may be completely blind.

There is nothing boring or "run-of-the-mill" about Aussies. They are one of the best dogs.
-
@trivet Aussies are awesome (I've had border collies my whole life until my current pup, they are equally awesome). My comment was mostly tongue in cheek, I don't have a designer dog that costs thousands of dollars to apparently only co-own.

@huzer
I figured as muchI just have much love for Aussies - as my Mya (gone now 5 years) was the best dog I ever had. She was an Aussie/lab mix, merle coloring, bright blue eyes and the intellect of an Aussie, size and short hair of a lab. Amazingly, she was the most laid-back dog I ever met. Smartest dog too. She didn't need training, she just plain understood English.
I miss her so much.

You are a good person. yeah, it's difficult trying to argue against breeders. That many of them is doing it for profit with no concept of genetics and health. Theory that mutts may be healthier. Etc, etc. Like trying to convince some of my friends that snow tires are better.

You are lucky! My experience is that intelligence in a high energy dog (one Malamute I knew) is a horrorshow. Able to get into cabinets with child proof locks and more.

Yes, she was something special.
This is the picture my wife found on-line from a rescue center.
She fell in love with this beautiful pup and we ended up driving 2 hours to go see her.
Needless to say, we brought her home. She was the best dog ever and is the gold standard to which all others are compared.
Here she is all grown up
And relaxing on a pile of laundry with a chew toy.
She was a good girl. The best. -
@Huzer Shouldnt read too much into dog behavior. They act really weird sometimes.
For instance, dogs usually love me. I was told to let them sniff you first, pet their backside instead of their head. For some reason holding my hand out in front of my neighbors dog pisses it off, but petting it on the head was just fine. Go figure.
-
@trivet Cute pup! My border that I had previous to my current dog is our gold standard. She was off-the-charts-intelligent, even by border collie standards (I've had three others). She was driven to please by doing things. The act of doing something was a reward for her. Food wasn't her reward either, just praise. When I tried to train her initially using treats, she was completely uninterested.
My Aussie is driven by supporting, he is an emotional critter that would make an awesome therapy dog.
