I think this "little" truck could be a hit. I'm just hoping it's reasonably small and cheap, at least compared to the F150. I would guess it'll be a bit cheaper than the Bronco Sport (depending on trim level). So maybe 27-32 for a decently optioned model? Not cheap compared to a 90's Ranger, but cheap in today's car world where I can spec a Corolla XSE to $30K.

I think it'll sell well.

@shop-teacher Definitely - I'm not sure on the name Maverick, think it'd do better as a Ranchero but I suppose Maverick does have some ford legacy as well (albeit in malaise era mehness).
I really think that Hyundai should have brought their small unibody truck to market a couple years ago and eaten everyone's lunch.
-
It's a less useful Ridgeline built in a factory not known for producing quality. But yeah, it's what a minority of people asked for.
-
@jminer I'm fine with Maverick, but would prefer Ranchero as well. I definitely agree about the little Hyundai.
-
@jminer I would have preferred the Courier name myself.
-
I've seen (and taken pictures of) a Bronco Sport in a parking lot (mfg plates). A truck on that platform is not compact.
-
@interstate366 I'm partial to the Courier name, but it's nowhere near enough MACHO TO THE MAX for what Ford is trying to become.

If it ends up looking more like a "proper truck" than the Ridgeline, it may sell better on that aesthetic merit alone. Also, Ford, thus 'Murican.
-
@mm54 Yes but people don't WANT compact trucks. This is more of a medium sized truck that's not absurdly chonky and tall from what I understand.
-
They'll need to keep the price down for sure. 32k max is getting into mid-size pricing tier which is tricky. I'm sure they have real data, but anecdotally the mid-sizers struggle to sell at the mid/high price points because the pricing overlap with the FS. The other issue is they're not discounted nearly the same based in MSRP % as a FS. I'm a bit of a unicorn as I was very certainly looking to buy a MS and not a FS, so pricing overlap wasn't as important as best price for the truck I wanted.
I think it'll do well. Probably push the retired angle (low easy to get in/out and cargo in/out) compared to the FS. Push college grads as your first truck to get the hooked for the future... Lux for older buyers, have some sporty stuff for the kids with lots of tech. Then also can push on fleets that need a truck, but not a FS or even a midsize. Might take from FS, MS, CUV sales, but try to grab enough non-Ford market share to balance it out...
-
@whoistheleader So are they giving up on the new Ranger then, which is supposed to be those same things (but isn't)?
-
@mm54 Unfortunately for those of us who are fans of small runabout pickups, the American truck market is all about being the biggest truck on the road.
The Ranger fell prey to this.
-
@winterlegacy
I'll keep shopping for a 30 year old toyota, then -
@lokerola This raises a question: why did they go with Maverick and not Ranger? The Ranger range of trucks were smaller utility vehicles, and this seems to go alongside that more than the sedan/coupe... Odd marketing...
-
@jminer Agreed on the Hyundai. They dragged their feet on the Santa Cruz too damn long. At this point they might as well hold onto it, electrify it, and then release it.
-
I really want this truck to be compact on its own merit, and not just in comparison to Ford's other trucks. The Ranger has lost all of its appeal for me now that they've become too tall to comfortably reach over into the bed. I'm sure there are plenty of commercial customers eager to add smaller trucks to their fleets, too...
-
@lokerola I am intrigued, not really a truck guy but if it starts cheap enough I'd be interested, I definitely don't need a full size and this would be perfect for the occasional home depot trip or whatever without too much compromise. I like the ridgeline facelift but those are also pricey even well used, they had said a couple years ago the maverick would start at $20k which seems impossible, but at 22 or 23 it could be a good buy, especially once incentives come out in a year or two.
-
@lokerola I'm gonna need my eyes checked, because my first thought was "that looks huge." Calling it smol... Time marches on.
-
I’m just going to say the typical enthusiast thing but I’d be really interested in one of these with AWD and a manual with the 2.0. I really want one more manual car that’s all weather capable. I keep eyeing up 2018ish WRXs but a truck would probably be an easier sell to my wife.
I think assuming it’s a Bronco sport with 24” of extra length for a bed; it’ll look good.
-
@lokerola If I can hold out a few years for a truck I would be considering one of these or a used ranger. Old Ranger prices have been kind of crazy lately.
