Update
After a suggestion from a friend I pulled the engine cover off again and tipped it over. The vacuum receptacle (not sure what it’s called) was filled with oil. I’m guessing the vacuum pump blew a seal and slowly filled the vacuum lines with oil. I plan on cleaning out the lines and seeing if it runs better. If that does the trick I’ll swap in a new pump.My wife’s X1 threw an engine code and is running like shit. I’m getting a cylinder 3 misfire along with intermittent misfires on all other cylinders. It’s got an N20 so the first thing I checked was the timing chain and it seems alright through the oil fill. I can’t hear the turbo spool at all and it definitely isn’t building any boost. It’s had a rattly wastegate for years which I also can’t hear anymore. I’m thinking blown turbo. Any other ideas or better way to nail the issue down?

@dipodomysdeserti sucks, how many miles on it?
I think if you have misfire the engine doesn't want tb build boost, to try and safe itself. What codes are being thrown?
-
@pyroholtz Here are all the codes: 002F01 002EFE 002EE0 002EEA. I should mention that I swapped coil packs with no change. Around 140k on the clock.

@DipodomysDeserti Regarding BMWs, the e30 is the only one that I like, and only with four doors, and only in white. Manual transmission, of course. That is the limit of my BMW expertise. I am all ears. Hope that helps.

@dipodomysdeserti I would assume with a no.3 injector cut (002eea) due to active misfire (002f01) would put the car in a limp mode and not allow itself to build boost. Also a single active misfire can cause erroneous misfires on other cylinders just as a note. So you could just be looking at a single cylinder issue. Can you see misfire counts on the other cylinders compared to cyl.3 or do you not have live data? So you swapped coil to another location and misfire did not follow coil? Swap plugs to another location as well or just coil?

@rusty-vandura I owned an ‘83 with a manual transmission and a factory LSD. It was dark blue with a tan interior. Got it for $1k, fixed it up and drove it for a while. It had about 200k miles on it and was much better built than any modern BMW I’ve had the pleasure of wrenching on.

@dipodomysdeserti That's nice to hear. I think those sedans are handsome and sensible. Those good old-fashioned clean Bavarian Farver Gnugen things that used to be what Deutsches Autos were all about. And if I were specifying one for myself, I'd probably pick a four-banger for simplicity's sake.
-
@thebarber Yeah, the lack of boost is probably due to the misfire. I swapped coils 1 and 3 and the misfire did not follow. I’ll do the plugs next and see what number three looks like. Gonna get a read on the battery as well, as it has had some starting issues after sitting for a while.
-
@dipodomysdeserti as @TheBarber has suggested, you could be looking at a bad plug on cylinder 3, either swap all new us in and see what happens or move them around.

What's a while. Few days, or weeks?
-
@dipodomysdeserti Make sure to note condition of the plugs being swapped. Compare them to each other. Yea if the plug is no change then the next suspects would be injector or valves. At 140k on a DI motor them sounding mighty suspect. Carbon build up by now is usually atrocious. Just looking at the codes it does seem be primarily a single cylinder issue. If it was true misfires on all cylinders then you'd be looking at stuff like timing, maf, fuel, you know, the things that affect all cylinders usually equally.
I don't work on BMW's so I couldn't tell you what to look for on the live data as i'm not sure what exactly their base values are supposed to be. Most of my experience with injectors being bad would be normal MAP values but with injector duration being pulled and fuel trim deviation between cylinders. Valves tend to be more of an issue when cold (but not exclusively) and you'll have a lot of deviation in MAP values from the pressure changes of sticking or unseated valves due to carbon buildup.

@gmporschenut-also-a-fan-of-hondas After about a week it’ll have a rough start.
-
@thebarber I suspect CBU is an issue. My wife runs it hard which has probably held it at bay, but the only driving this last year with that car has been quick trips (if any).

I;ve seen a couple posts about a fan or fan relay, do you remember if those were turning on? -
@gmporschenut-also-a-fan-of-hondas I think it may be a leaky vacuum pump.
