A thing seldom seen!

Snow in Austin! It's been snowing since before I got up at about 9:45. Let up for a bit around 11:00, turned to corn snow for a while, but now it's coming down heavily in big wet flakes. After breakfast we headed down to the park to do some sledding. This being Texas, there was an interesting assortment of ersatz sleds out there: trash can lids, storage bins, cardboard boxes, laundry baskets. We have three disc sleds that we bought, in all places, White Sands, NM to sled down the dunes there. The best part of the day was sharing our sleds with the kids who didn't have one.
And, to top it all off: WE HAD THUNDER SNOW JUST NOW!!
Anyway, I know this is no more than a petty annoyance to you northerners, but I think this is maybe the just the third or fourth time in 20 years that we've had a measurable snowfall, and this is the biggest one I remember. And it's just coming down harder.
Our neighbor hadn't taken down his inflatables yet, and it made an awesome winter wonderland for the kids.

@ttyymmnn whenever I read thunder snow it's in acdc voice.
-
@ttyymmnn Even Texas is getting snow? Dang. Where the snow in MD?

Don't know if this storm will come your way or not.
-
@ttyymmnn Not looking like it. There may be some cold rain next Saturday.
-
You can keep it. It's 38 and sunny here in Ohio today.
-
Fun!
Even snowing in west Texas. Just 38 and heading toward 1in rain right down here. Booo

My brother in law lives in Fort Wayne, and he said that we have more snow than he does.

@ttyymmnn Not sure how familiar you are with Round Rock West, but I grew up across the street from Deepwood Elementary. If you know the school, I have some of my fondest winter memories sledding down the hill on St. Williams on a snow day, pretty sure it was 3rd or 4th grade (so 1985/6). We got a few inches of accumulation, so there were NO cars out at all and we sledded for hours.

We live in Wells Branch, and I drive past Deepwood every time I take my boys to the dentist up on 620. Nice neighborhood.
-
@ttyymmnn we haven't had a good snow in Georgia in far too long. I hope we get some of that our way. How many inches?
I definitely am familiar with how to make the most of a very small amount of snow. Was it enough to sled down the same hill more than once?
-
@taylor-martin I'd be completely fine if didn't snow the rest of the winter. Ain't got time for that noise.

When we went to the biggest hill in the neighborhood, the snow was slowing down considerably, and the best run was still fairly slippery but ended in a mud and slush pit. Still fun though, and it snowed a lot more after we left, so sledding might have improved. The grass took a major beating today.
-
@ttyymmnn Yeah, these wimpy by northern standards snows do have a limit as to how much sledding you can do on one run for sure. That's why you have to be the first out there!

As a northener, I like snow. It's very dark here in late autumn/winter without it and rain is a lot more miserable than some snowfall.

We are up to at least 3" up in GTown
-
@ttyymmnn And here in Spokane we might be having one of the statistically warmest winters in recent history, endless days of 10-15F above normal, and snow that seldom lasts more than a few days. It was colder in mid-late October than it will be this coming week.

We are about two miles south of the Wilco line, and I think we've gotten at least two. It's been snowing all day.

As I mentioned, snow is very rare here. And most of our winters the past few years have been drier and warmer than normal. So we'll take this. I turned my trumpet chair around so I can see out the window while I practice.

@ttyymmnn I'm just a little jealous
We had 7-8" Wednesday before last, but par for the course this year, 90% of it was gone 4 days later.

Weather in general has been whacky lately, kind of all over the place. We were out at a cabin in the western Hill Country at the end of December and experienced an epic amount of rainfall the night before we were supposed to leave. I lay awake all night thinking of the low water crossing we would encounter on our way home, and subsequently took a longer route home to avoid them. Fortunately, no issues.

@ttyymmnn The fact that people even have sleds suggests to me that we keep way too much crap in our garages as a nation.

Few people did. We only have them because we bought them seven years ago to slide down sand dunes.
-
@frinesi2 Oh come oooon... just one time? I live in FL and I certainly won't see any there
-
@ttyymmnn Love it! My parents (and surely my nephews) are really enjoying it.
