Thousand Islands
-
My sister showed me an article from Al Jazeera regarding the Sriwijaya Air crash, mentioning how the news site translated the name of the area where the airplane crashed – kepulauan seribu – into English: Thousand Islands, which I guess is true? Seribu means a thousand, while kepulauan translates as islands.
I originally thought that the English name for that regency is Seribu Islands, given that it wasn't named because there are literally 1000 islands, but just to simplify that the area contains many (small) islands, 342 to be exact.
This reminds me about how a Malaysian newspaper translated (converted?) the name of rapper 50 cent into Malaysian Ringgit of RM 1,50.

@annoying_salman English is a strange language, translations to and from it definitely regularly leave things to be desired.
The 50 cent name translation is hilarious though!
-
@annoying_salman it's even worse when you consider that, in the last decade or two of the last century, one could buy a Kraft branded salad dressing for prawn cocktails known as Thousand Island Dressing....
-
@silentbutnotreallydeadly not to mention the French dressing...
-
@annoying_salman Thousand Islands is also a region in New York. I'm originally from a little north of that area.
-
@annoying_salman And it's not just the one publication, most of the English sources I read are saying thousand islands.
-
I guess Malays are no more creative than Canadians/Americans; we've got our own Thousand Islands along the boarder that separates Ontario from New York. It's alright, I guess, but doesn't seem as magnificent after seeing "thousand island" type places like Ha Long Bay in Vietnam or even what you see on the southern cost of South Korea.
Apparently the Thousand Islands salad dressing comes from that area in New York, which shouldn't surprise me, I guess: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand_Island_dressing

@annoying_salman LOLLL RM1,50! I love it

Yeah, I'm also still confused about how to say "Plymouth". I was flabbergasted the first time I heard the correct pronunciation of it.
It was almost a decade since I found that picture in the internet, but it's still funny even after all these years.

My sister also compared the islands with the salad dressing too!

So his name fluctuates with the currency rates?
Hilarious!!

Interesting! What's the reason behind the name of that region? There are many legends here that use number 1000 just to mean that there are – or they want – "shit-ton" of it.

Yeah, I don't really follow the news about it lately. The last time I read about it, the plane was reportedly crashed north of Jakarta. I read an article about it on The Guardian before bed last night and they also use Thousand Island.
-
@annoying_salman There are a little over 1800 islands in that region in the St. Lawrence River.

Whoa, I'm curious now about how Vietnamese and South Korean named that region. It will be interesting if the reason of the name is because the previous generations couldn't count the number of islands with their fingers, so they just simply used the number of 1000 like we did here.

Not to mention that his name is different in almost every country.

Underpromise and overdeliver, I like that.

@annoying_salman unrelated to the thread here, but I just wanted to say thanks for your post about the burger seller. It gave me some things to think about.
-
@baconsandwich You're welcome. I hope the post can make us be more aware of the underprivileged people, especially during these period of times.
