Reddit’s Just Rolled into the Shop is a veritable cornucopia of the many wonders and oddities of shop lyfe. You never know what’s gonna roll in. Here’s what caught my eye this week.

C/S: it just stopped on me. I have a warranty with $0 deductible and I’m entitled to a rental vehicle at no charge while you have my car.

...This old POS has been sitting for a few years. DOE crane, Detroit 671 powered, low hours (2200) used to unload tomahawk missiles from train cars in it's previous life...
...My guy started it up to move it outside and turn around to work on the light wiring. This thing has a 70GPM pump so needless to say it puts some fluid out very quickly and as such the boom came on up pretty quick. The boom valve body was apparently stuck in the boom up position and when the solenoid activated as you can see the boom, uhh, went up...Just poked out of the shop... 15 seconds of abrupt chaos. You too can add a skylight to your shop with this one easy trick!!

It isn’t leakingCustomer declined radiator replacement
(no pic or video, just text)
So today I saw my first example of a customer who is willing to shell out way too much money.
Vehicle comes in for a new transmission pan as well as for refill of the fluid. They hit a large rock, noticed the leak then had it towed in, everything going normally. Shop buddy is working on that while I’m messing around trying to get a timing belt off a Honda. Then I hear grinding coming from the bay with the transmission job, I think nothing of it.
The grinding goes in for something like 20 minutes and at this point I’m confused, I wander over to see what’s going on, the underside was rusty but the transmission didn’t look too bad.
I ask the guy working and he explains, the only reason I haven’t heard of this lady is because I’m semi new (summer worker, school rest of the year). Apparently this lady comes in every spring to get the bottom of her car ground.
She doesn’t like the look of rust, but doesn’t like how the car smells for a day or two after undercoating. Her solution is that she has a standing agreement with the shop, every spring, grind the rust off the bottom of her car, no parts just labour, at 1.5x shop rate (110 an hour). This is usually a two hour procedure.
She’s been doing this for nearly a decade.
The owner is considering cutting off the deal because she’s lost so much material down below it’s approaching the point of dangerous to lift because we live in southern Ontario, and this car has never been undercoated in a decade.More money than sense.

Old Corolla in for 2 tires, probably hasn’t been driven in a while… I’m the only one in the shop who isn’t afraid of spiders, so they had me change both tires lol

We’re unsure what caused it. Could’ve been defective or could’ve been beat on. The truck is brand new in every other way. It’s not even dirty… you’d be able to tell if it was beat on and nothing shows signs of it. Only thing that could’ve happened is that the customer drove it in 4L for extended periods of time and at higher speeds and it just completely gave out.

...I did do that. This is my engine. Dropped a nut down the intake, I used an endoscope to look for it. Couldn't find it. Thought everything would be alright, NOPE.

The truck was on the side of the road right in front of them, the police came and did an information exchange. I assume that the company that owns the truck will be liable for the repairs, but this happened yesterday so we’re still waiting to see how it shakes out. Edit: It’s worth mentioning that I’m a fleet mechanic and this is one of our vehicles.

Apparently the customer was in charge of delivering the gravy to a end of year sport break-up event. They hit a speed bump at too much speed and the containers fell off the rear seats and went everywhere. The whole interior had to be ripped out and trust me the smell was awful.

It’s hilarious to me because he’s not even an amateur. He’s a coworker of mine and a ford certified tech. Really good at what he does and has been doing it for a while. Idk why he did that and kept it like that for so long lmao

Sorry for the late post! I couldn't figure out what was going on with my wifi so I spent the day in the garage and came back to find everything working so that I could finally complete this week's roundup.

I'm just happy it's here!
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be shaking in the corner, thinking about that rust.

@Shop-Teacher I'm terrified of seeing these cars. I've never felt the need for undercoating, I just hit a car wash with an underbody wash whenever there's a convenient day where the roads are dry, but I see these things and have doubts. Fortunately my car only has three New England winters behind it and was generally rust free when I brought it up, so I figure it's likely to die from something else long before rust gets it.
-
@Urambo-Tauro call me stupid if you want, but why bother changing the hail damaged roof of the van? who's going to see it?
-
@facw I imagine that depends on the vehicle. That '06 4-runner is the same age as my Sierra, so that one hit me in the feels. I had a bunch of rust repair done last year, but even before that mine was significantly cleaner than the average truck it's age. I think it's because I'll hit an underbody car wash a few times a winter when the temp gets above freezing for a couple days.

That's a great question. My best guess is that it was found while assessing hail damage at the front of the vehicle, and it all got added to the same insurance claim?
-
@Shop-Teacher One of the perks of living in the south: I never have to think about rust on a vehicle.
-
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold You just have to make sure some asswipe like me hasn't moved down south and dumped it on y'all

As bad as that roof is, some of those holes might have poked through and made it leaky.
-
@Shop-Teacher I have a trick for that. What you see as "minor rust" I see as an automatic pass. little spot on the rocker panel? Trash car.
-
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold LOL! Probably for the best.

I remember having a 4runner. I'm surprised they even put it up with the rust that bad!
