FP page design
Planned for @ClassicDatsunDebate to use his expertise in project management to create a set of objectives and schedule for structure and content in starting our FP. As a start in defining the project objectives, this is what we have published to the community before:
Oppo is all about community, and the mission of the FP is to support and promote the community in two ways. The first is to showcase the long-form content and art work from our membership, especially those who hope to write professionally. From its beginnings, Oppo was a place where aspiring car journalists honed their skills until they got noticed by the editors at Jalopnik and beyond. The new editors at Autopian have stated that they want to use The Hyphen in much the same way, and former opponauts now writing for other outlets like the Drive also know there is talent to be mined here.
The second goal of our FP is to serve as a landing page for visitors to the site and be the gateway to forum membership.
This is what we have published so far about our working model:
Our current preferred FP model is one that is fully contained in Node BB. We were testing other content management platforms like Word Press, but there are no ready to use ways to connect them to the Node BB forum platform. We decided that copying content between two platforms was too labor intensive to sustain. Our current working model uses a special curator-applied tag applied to topics. The FP is essentially a search results page that collects all topics with that tag. The version running on @MM54 ’s development machine looks like a rudimentary version of a Kinja blog, where a topic is displayed with an extra large thumbnail pic and the first several lines of text from the posted topic. The thumbnail and the text are dynamic, being pulled from the original topic on the forum, and clicking on the topic brings the reader to the actual forum thread to read and join the comments.
We are currently thinking of adapting the method we use to designate topics for Best Of Oppo for selection of FP content. The Curators will identify long form content that is well-suited and ask the author for permission to tag/elevate it.
Autopian connection
We discussed the suggestion from the Autopian staff that they put a link to Oppo on their site. We came up with the idea of reciprocating by putting links and a referral to their site on Oppo. One possibility that was floated was having a regular "Now playing on The Autopian" post for our FP.
@jminer offered to contact David and Torch to discuss the proposal.
Community building
As part of an effort to build the Oppo community, @CarsOfFortLangley suggested a monthly feature called something like "what do you do off of Oppo?" or something catchier to highlight a particular opponaut. The benefits would be for people to get to know each other better and stimulate conversations in other threads.
Next meeting: July 12th

Don't look now Oppo, he's referring to himself in the 3rd person again.

@Chariotoflove I like the autopian connection idea. Ditto @CarsOfFortLangley's "community building" feature.
The alphabetical arrangement of meeting attendees is also a nice touch.
-
@Chariotoflove my only concern with an Autopian partnership is their lack of a Planetopian vertical.

You are assuming I have a life outside of oppp?
I didn’t want to say anything, but…

I’ll put that in their suggestion box.

uh, are there other parts of the internet besides OppO and car parts?
Actually, this would be a good podcast thing, where the discussion would drift to where that opponaut goes. But, kept somewhat related. For example, today I could talk about how I'm trying to learn the right way to smoke ribs, but at the butcher shop I saw what initially appeared like a real typecast guy! Older man, in an OCC hat, Kennebunkport Maine shirt, driving an H2....black with chrome, I forget the vanity plate, as if there was any other kind of H2. well, I wonder about people sometimes....
You see that can work well. Anyway, I like the ideas of the FP. Jellopicnic in the long-ago past used to siphon our ideas and at least credit us and where they found the notion, like eight years ago (I think) when I posted a video of a rallycross M3 with AWD and an F1 turbo..
(I had to find it again, it moved)
...and they picked it up! there was mention. later on, they stopped doing that and just took it from anywhere they could....just like we do! lol.
Keep up the good work folks! We have a good direction and good people.

@Chariotoflove About the landing page; Implementation sounds good, Moderators will need to be quick about embiggening posts to keep the FP active for visitors.

-
@Chariotoflove did we ever come do a decision about how we want to handle exceptionally young people who join our group?

Hoooo this could go really good or really bad. Mainly hinging on if you interview @ForSweden .
-
@Chariotoflove will Oppo Gold members have direct front page posting privileges?
-
@EssExTee what was the main concern with this? I remember it was briefly brought up previously and decided nothing needed to be done as far as data management, since there was no money being made on Oppo (actually, the opposite of that). Or do you mean more from a posting standards/community perspective?
Speaking of losing money, @Chariotoflove (keeping in mind I just woke up) I had the greatest shitpost idea, man. You know that ASPCA Sarah McLachlan commercial? That, but for Oppo. Fundraising season baby
” For just eighteen dollars a month, only sixty cents a day, you’ll help host a haven for DOTS, project car content, hour rule, and shitposts. Mostly shitposts. Call, or join online in the next thirty minutes, and you’ll receive this welcome kit with a photo of a weird crab that looks like our logo.”
-
@EssExTee Send them a link to our OnlyFans?
My greasy range hood fan will send them running

Some of us put that information right in our names. I guess more specifically I'm a floor sanitization engineering specialist with the additional certifications to operate a Stark Industries 3000-series mop on both linoleum and ceramic, but if you're not in the business you won't need to know all that.
-
@Nicky-Chagrin-Janitor-of-SHIELD
Stark Industries 3000-series mop
Is that the nuclear powered one, or the one with the lasers for removing really tough grime?
-
@іди-на-хуй-Влад-formerly-known-as-Distraxi I'm certified on the very latest one, with the special anti-streak nanomaterial mop head and a micro arc reactor powering a selectable laser and jackhammer attachment on the end of the handle.
-
@Nicky-Chagrin-Janitor-of-SHIELD
Jackhammer, huh? These SHIELD folks must be really world-class slobs.
-
@іди-на-хуй-Влад-formerly-known-as-Distraxi You have to be ready for anything. The lab folks have this habit of spilling stuff and failing to tell you what it is when they call for a cleanup. My favorite mop got sucked in to a parallel universe when I was cleaning up a beaker somebody dropped because they didn't tell me I had to use one of the special mop heads for that goo.
-
@Chariotoflove Great work as always. I think being neighbours to the Autopian is a solid plan.
-
I think the Autopian connection is a great idea. One downside of that site is the commenting system isn't all that great.
