Of happenings - roommate got his motorcycle permit
-
After years of peer pressure, my roommate is joining the motorcycle world.
As is tradition, let's find him a first bike. I don't know the actual budget, but let's say... $10k? He'd prefer a new, or at least modern bike. He's not going to go for a bike from the 90's.
Very much a fan of full-fairing sport bikes. He's responsible enough to jump on something with some oomph without binning it into a tree in the first five minutes, and at 5'10 170ish pounds can fit on pretty much anything.

I’d say CBR500R ABS—solid beginner bike that looks fast and he can grow into.
-
@AestheticsInMotion Normal beginner bike - Panigale, S1000RR, turbo Busa, R1, Ninja H2, Dodge Tomahawk, etc.
-
@OhCrikeyTheRozzers that's a good reccomendation.
-
@HFV I wish. The 1200 is probably the only one modern enough for him to go for and I think that would be a bit... Much. It would also hurt me to see someone with a 1200 instead of the infinitely cooler prior gens.

The other night after band practice, our singer's son, who's 19, announced that he bought his first bike...GSXR1000. Our bass player, who has his instructors licence, flipped out on him. It got, um, heated. He even said he'd buy the bike off him so he wouldn't ride it.

You must be on the same subreddits as me!
-
@ClassicDatsunDebate Tell him you're going to take out a life insurance policy on him.
-
@AestheticsInMotion I don't see a problem, go for it!
-
@fintail Exactly. The kid's 6'4" so that was his excuse. His dad was kinda passive about it but our bass player continued later on Whatsapp. It was kinda awkward when one guy is telling the other guy that his kid is going to die.
-
@ClassicDatsunDebate If he's an instructor, I'd err on the side of listening to his input. For a tall kid, an ADV style bike would have been just fine... I'm 6'3" and occasionally feel cramped on my NC750X (but then I stand up in the saddle to stretch)

@AestheticsInMotion Full fairing? Ninja 400.
-
It takes one very disciplined and/or skilled and/or lucky 19 year old to ride a bike like that and not end up wrecking it or himself (or both). People who haven’t ridden modern super bikes don’t really appreciate the speed and power—200 HP on a 443 lb. bike is a higher power to weight ratio than Veyron, 918, LaFerrari, etc. I’m a former instructor and I would have had the same response.

Good choice, not super hairy until fully revved
-
Also a good choice and a bit cheaper than the Honda. I cut my teeth on a Ninja 250 and my buddy’s Ninja 500 and they’re a lot better looking now.

That would be the smart move I think. The buddy I ride with 99% of the time has one though, and I think my roommate wants something different from him

@AestheticsInMotion R7. Fully faired racy looking machine that's not too crazy, but still happy to wheelie.
-
@AestheticsInMotion O.o budget of 10kfor a first bike?
ninja?

Ninja 400 abs? Great looks, under 5 second 0 to 60 but not too crazy for a newbie.

It's the issue that when you're 19, you're still an idiot and will chance and get baited into the wrong time, wrong place. All it'll take is a group ride or some punk in a modded R35 on Marine Way; whatever it is to see red.
Litres properly fuck off and in the actuality of a eye blink a new rider can in the butterfly zone speed with the impending noob freeze up.
The other likely outcome is he racks up excessive tickets and gets the bike impounded right quick and kills the bank account
I majority of riders I know that were/are under 25 and put decent km with a + 600cc RR had their bike either impounded at some point or written off.

@Alfalfa that was actually my first thought, although I worry the engine may be a bit too... Spicy.

The mt07 has been a common choice for more "advanced" beginner riders. It's a bit much, but seems to do well with a disciplined wrist. If he's responsible as you say, it may be a good fit.

@AMGtech I sense... Ulterior motives.
