N'd Transmission

You have noticed the lack of of N pun themed posts in the last several weeks. That is because the trans in my car blew up.
To tell the full story you have to start at the 3k oil change I did. The oil change was normal, but i saw the equivalent of the below. A few drops of liquid on the transmission. There was no warning lights or anything, and the car was driving fine, so I figure id adress it at the first dealer provided oil change at 6k. No dipstick either.
As ive gotten more comfortable car ive been practicing accelerating and shifting. Cue me returning from my parents house, doing a 0 - 80 run to get on the highway (CT has on-ramps that just end in a stop sign then an immeadite merge on the highway. Never let anyone tell you that 0-60 isnt relevant).
I miss a shift and the engine goes to redline, then squeaks tires as i drop it into 3rd. I feel nad about this, but everything seems fine. Once on the highway a few minutes later i feel a momentary jerk and loss of power, and when i get off the highway, theres a whine in 2nd.The next day, my second gear synchro destroys itself, and theres clearly chunks of gear that catch on other gears in the trans. I can commute but its really bad. I call Hyundai, get an apt for a week later. At thi point im convinced i blew the car up. Cue the scariest week of driving, as im constantly worried the car is gonna stall, and worse still, the dreading the shame of telling my coworkers that i blew up the trans, and the impending bill.
Cut to the drop off day, i bring it in at 7:30, and get driven the 5 min to work in a Genisis g70. About 2 pm i get the call that theres a leak from one of the axle shafts, and it was caused by a factory defective seal. I nearly cry with relief.
Turns out i have been driving for probbally a few weeks with 0 trans fluid, and the trans blew up spectacularly
They give me a ioniq plug in hybrid loaner, which ill review later
Now begins the waiting game. The dealership wont order the trans till Hyundai approves it, and this takes A MONTH. I guess theyre lucky the GR Corolla and the new type R arent out yet, because i was seriously considering lemon lawing the car, it certainly qualified.
The dealership gets the ok, and OF COURSE, the trans is back ordered. Great. Not only will ot be another month before they get it, its another week sfter that to swap them. IM GONNA MISS THE OPPO RALLY!
As it turns out, the trans come off back order a few days later and they got it in from korea a while later.
I go visit the dealership as theyre in process of swapping it.
Bloody hole where the trans goes.
(Gore warning)
!
Mag drain plug of the old trans.
Today i should get my car back. There doenst appear to be any recall or tsb, and Ive only seen one post on the forums about a leaky trans. Apperently, its just my luck to get the faulty trans seal.
Today i get my car back.

@Shoop now that ive got this post off my chest i can post other cool stuff

It's absurdly dangerous that they have these old highways that are well over the capacity they were designed for, and still leave the on ramps work like that. They need to modernize the ramps, close them, or lower the speed limits (and enforce). We have some short ramps here in Massachusetts, but Connecticut is just awful.
-
@facw we have them in Ohio too. Picture a five lane highway that was repaved like two years ago. Same for the on ramp. Then a light, with 300 feet between light and “you are now on the highway”.
Hell.
-
@facw naw the gov should just subsidies cars with over 300hp for safety
-
@Shoop For highway "ramps" like this, we may need 1000 HP EVs with 2s 0-60 times:

@Shoop ugh that sickening feeling when you feel your car breaking
super glad you didn't do it yourself and that it's all fixed now!
-
I guess the Oppo Hyundai curse continues.
I know there's a few members here that have had serious mechanical issues either personal or surrogate.

@Qaaaaa
these are like stop sign, 10feet to accelerate -
@Exage03040 it’s almost like Hyundais are bad cars
-
@gmporschenut-also-a-fan-of-hondas this is a photo of me in highschool
-
@Shoop I was out of college visiting a friend when I first encountered these and thought "what fresh hell is this?"
-
@Shoop OOF!

The three 2009/2010 Hyundai Accents my family all own have been almost faultless mechanically! At 205k km, I've only replaced maintenance items like oil, wiper blades, spark plugs, coil packs and suspension components...and a starter once because the ground cable on it rusted (thanks Nova Scotia DOT for all that salt in the winter...)
-
@RallyDarkstrike 127k miles just isn’t that much though. I firmly believe 2009/2010, Hyundai peaked. Then the next gen Elantra came out and was a pile of shit. I drove a 2009 Elantra with the Beta II for years and it was amazing. Nothing but problems for people I know who’ve had newer.

I dunno, it is on the roads and wit the sale we get up here
It's rare to find cars here for sale with more than 250 or 300k kms...most have rusted away by then or the pothole-y roads have battered them to death
Sadly Humdrum has her share of creaks and rattles on rougher roads. I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me at all, but a quiet, luxurious ride she is not

@beefchips it wasnt even the fact it was broken. Thats just a time and $ problem that will be what it is, no point stressing. It was having to admit to my coworkers that i blew it up, and the anount of teasing i would get for waiting for a car for 8 months, then getting it and blowing it up a month later. Made me super anxious

Jaybus, is that real?

@іди-на-хуй-Влад-formerly-known-as-Distraxi Yep, the infamous Merritt Parkway (Route 15), which despite its "Parkway" designation is a busy highway with 55 mph speed limits going into New York. It was built for a time when there were many fewer cars on the road. In addition to the short ramps (some of which have been improved), it has tiny shoulders, which means that any breakdowns, crashes, or even just traffic stops can completely snarl it. It also has low (but beautiful) bridges, so trucks aren't allowed, which is nice.

Big oof! I had a friend with a similar situation, but with her Kia Forte's engine. She was driving one day when it straight up seized at about 60 mph or so. Apparently the car was burning so much oil that it was only 2k past her oil change, yet the engine was bone dry. The car had about 95k miles.
Engine replaced under warranty and is thus far not a heavy drinker.
Sorta off topic: I'll still say that 0-60 isn't relevant if you know you and your car's limitations.
Most of the cars that I've owned for the past decade have 0-60 times of 12 to 42 seconds. Yes, 42 seconds. You might think that it's impossible to get by in modern traffic in cars that slow but it's really not that bad.
You kinda have to think like a trucker, or someone on a scooter. You don't pull out unless the gap is large enough and you're often using up the entire rev range. I've done those nasty east coast on-ramps before and I've even managed to pull out safely out there, too. lol

My local on ramp. Circled is a stop sign. Its at the bottom of a hill so cars are routinely doing 85 in a 55 there. What usually happens is a person goes, then the person behind trys to go and get into the same gap, then the first person stops and gets rear ended. Happens once a week.
