@Arch-Duke-Maxyenko But they left Romulus and Remus behind? Wtf
-
@Arch-Duke-Maxyenko and yet the roman legacy lives on, even in the name of the city!
It was probably some crackhead looking for scrap...
-
@Vondon302 Kidnapping a wolf is a far less serious crime than kidnapping young children.
-
@Arch-Duke-Maxyenko Not the she-wolf!
I guess it's easy enough to get a replacement made.
The fact they cut it off at the paws suggest they were just trying to get the most scrap bronze with the least work rather than intending to steal it as art.
Hitting up wikipedia, it seems that the original she-wolf statue in Rome is likely not ancient, instead dating from the 11th or 12th century, while Romulus and Remus are known to have been added in the 15th century. Obviously the story is much older, and there are existing classical examples of theme.

Probably hanging upside down in the city square. Has anyone checked?
-
If you elected a dictator this wouldn't have happened
-
... more specifically, from the beams of a petrol station?
-
@beefchips Cancellation culture anybody?
The statue was at the center of some controversy in 2020 when Cincinnati council member Chris Seelbach tweeted that he wanted the she-wolf and her mythological sons removed because the statue was gifted to Cincinnati by Mussolini.
-
@Arch-Duke-Maxyenko I wonder what they used, a battery powered sawzall or maybe a 4" battery powered grinder with a cuttoff wheel.
-
@Vondon302 They just look confused like, where da fuck'n milk brah?!
-
@RacinBob Could be, but I'd expect some graffiti on the plinth or the twins for that sort of thing.
Most statue vandalism we've seen recently makes it pretty clear why it happened.
In any event, this does open the door to replace it with a non-Mussolini version, which would probably be for the best. To be honest I'm pretty surprised that this gift from Mussolini wasn't melted down for weapons during WWII.

All they saw was the scrap value and took it without paws.
-
@beefchips Guarantee you this was scrap. One of my friends at a nonprofit I used to work for was posting on social media about the statue being stolen from in front of their office building, same deal, cut off at the legs (except, in that case, I think there was some damage to the granite pedestal, as if more than one attempt was made). It turned up a few days later in a scrapyard, cut up into tiny pieces, owner of the yard recognized them as clearly part of a statue and called it in. They had an ID, wasn't crack heads, more like meth heads, but close, I guess
-
@facw Should be replaced with a giant bronze plate of Skyline chili
-
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold But why would anyone want to see that?
-
@facw IDK why anyone wants to see anything in Cincinnati
-
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold Some friends of mine were just there and said downtown was quite nice.
-
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold hey now

I can agree, and the use the same tools as you would to cut off a catalytic converter. The only question is how did they carry it off? One would assume a vehicle and they there would be cameras in the park.......
-
@Arch-Duke-Maxyenko hey!
-
@facw Replace it with Dr Johnny Fever. But leave Romulus and Remus there too just for the added wtf effect.
-
@Nicky-Chagrin-Janitor-of-SHIELD For anyone wondering what us old guys are going on about
-
@ranwhenparked Someone stole Carl T. Hayden’s head from downtown Phoenix last year.
