New year, new thing
This new thing, prior to unboxing.
And during unboxing
Yes, a new phone. The camera in my previous one began to play up so I bought a new one (yes, you can buy phone cameras on their own). Worked fine for a few weeks and then the phone wanted nothing more to do with it. Disabled the standard app, installed another and after about a dozen restarts we were back in business for another few weeks. Installed another app and about two dozen restarts and we were back in business again for a week at which point that seemed to be that.
So instead of buying another s/h previously mid priced phone I bought an actual new but pleasingly cheap one. It's got multiple cameras for some reason but better still it has a pleasingly big battery so hopefully it won't need charging every five minutes. Consequently it's a solid (well, solid cheap plastic), heavy object that would do a better job of driving a nail than its trendily skinny predecessor were I so inclined.
Catches of course. It's not just made in China like an iPhone, it's made by a Chinese company, Xiaomi. There are long agreements to agree to which basically say "everything that can possibly go wrong is nothing to do with us, do you agree (y/n) and "all your innermost thoughts are going to be beamed direct to the CCP, do you agree (y/n)".
So there we go.
Now, President Xi, how about your government's treatment of the Uigh.........
