Are you a skilled mechanic and want to live in beautiful Warren, Michigan?
-
Just came across this job posting at work. GM is looking for a skilled technician to work in our mechanical assembly shop here at Design building and maintaining GM's fleet of historic concept cars. There's definitely more beautiful locations than Warren, but this job is pretty incredible if you're mechanically inclined and want to work on some unique one-of-a-kind prototypes.

Here's just a handful of the concepts I've seen in the shop there during my time here:
1938 Buick "Y-Job" - the very first concept car!
1959 Corvette Sting Racer
1962 Corvair Monza GT
1968 Chevrolet Astro II
1,000,000th Corvette Restoration - Damaged in the museum sinkhole, restored here at Design
2002 Cadillac Cien
-
@StuckMTB I get the feeling that they just threw out the 1 millionth Corvette and swapped in another.
-
Man, that sounds like an awesome job for the right OPPO.
-
@davesaddiction That's exactly what I was thinking.
@Albino-Kangaroo if I hadn't seen the progress for myself I'd agree with you! There were several other cars from the museum that they didn't restore though. I guess if they swap more than 49% of the parts it isn't considered original anymore. This one must have just made the cutoff!
-
@StuckMTB I am niether a skilled mechanic, nor someone who wants to live in Warren, MI, but for anyone who is that would be a really cool place to work!
-
@StuckMTB No and hell no. But in all honesty: that would be a great position for a skilled mechanic and would probably make up for living on the East side.
-
@StuckMTB You have restored my faith! I guess if Jerry Seinfeld (fake classic Porsche, really wasn't his fault) and the seller of the vin swapped UTE had taken some pictures we would all be converted into believers.
-
@StuckMTB Hey you can work in Warren and not live there. My work is just east of the tech center. Half hour drive from my house(26 miles) and my yard and neighborhood looks like this.
Sounds like a damn dream job. -
I like that blue car named after a minivan
-
I am definitely not qualified for that job, nor would I want to live near Warren, MI. But WOW would that be a fun job.
-
@StuckMTB Damn. I don't really want to live in Warren, but that job description checks the boxes of all kinds of different things I've done in the past.
-
@ITA97 Hey nobody wants to live in Warren but the suburbs to the west are nice and if your trendy and hip there's always Royal Oak.
I've been in the tech center. It'd be a fantastic place to work. -
@StuckMTB Qualified for all but one requirement
"Maintain a professional appearance at show venues"
I dress like a bum
-
@StuckMTB super cool! One of my good friends lives in Warren, his dad used to work for GM and supervised the care and transportation of their show cars. Sadly he got laid off in 2020 when GM had to stop doing shows, but it was a super cool job. My friends grandfather was also an engineer at GM back in the 70s and helped produce the K5 Blazer.
-
@Shop-Teacher Lived in Warren for about 1.5 years. There's a section that isn't too bad (stay north of 696).
-
@i86hotdogs I'll just stay here, thanks
-
@StuckMTB I'm about 99% positive I could get hired for this job, and it sounds pretty cool. But why don't they list pay? Why does the description make it sound like 4 jobs in one? Why do I suspect they'll offer 80-90k at most?
I mean I wouldn't actually apply, largely because no mountains and it's awfully hard to moto year round in Michigan. But I even have experience with lathes, CNC, and old school Bridgeport mills.
Hey employers, LIST YOUR PAY SCALE

Not likely - more likely that they cannibalized another car for it. That era of cars had a lot more ease in repairs than today.
-
@StuckMTB if I apply can I keep my current cushy white collar pay?
-
@Bandit I tried using the chat on the listing webpage. Holy hell that is one of the worst bots I've ever chatted with. Didn't get me anywhere, so I just posted on the GM subreddit to try to get a pay range idea.
-
@StuckMTB only if they give me a fleet of every Caprice made in history, all rust proofed, and the government stops using salt in the winter.
