Is it time to move on?
-
I've been putting off the upgrade to windows 11 for a very simple reason.
The fucking taskbar.
Apparently there's a hack for it now, but I've not researched enough about the other features. Apparently the task scheduler is much better and I'm not getting enough battery out of my laptop as is. so maybe its gonna be better. Does anyone have any comments on Win11?
-
@tae is that a fucking vertical taskbar on muh good Christian Oppo?
At least there's a setting now to anchor the icons to the left instead of centered.
I'm still waiting for the free update to be pushed to my laptop and I have to look into getting my desktop compatible. It should be, but I think I gotta tweak some BIOS settings.
-
@EssExTee I got used to it many years ago for some reason. I just like having my "useful" screen area to be taller than wider. I thought Win11 by default didn't allow it like win10 does.
-
@tae Lucky for me, my 6700k does not meet the minimum specs for Windows 11, despite outperforming a huge chunk of computers that DO meet the specs.
-
@tae You can at least move the icons on the taskbar back to the left rather than centered, but I don't think you can move the taskbar to the sides or top anymore?
I've used Win11 when working on client's machines, but will be sticking with Win10 for awhile.
Win10 is still supported by big fixes and security patches until 2025 anyway, so you've got awhile yet...
To be one of THOSE people, if you don't do a lot of PC gaming and don't use any specialty software, have you thought about giving Linux a shot...? I use it daily and got a few Oppos to try it and convert over for their basic everyday 'daily driver' PCs - @ibRAD is one of them, but I forgot who else off the top of my head!

I hate the hardware requirements they've arbitrarily put on it...a lot of older hardware could run Win11 PERFECTLY fine other than the TPM 2.0 requirement and CPU requirements they've tacked on...
SOOOO many perfectly usable machines are going to get thrown out and a lot of money is going to be wasted by consumers just because their perfectly fine PC is now arbitrarily not good enough to run Win11 when it still runs Win10 great.
-
@RallyDarkstrike I want the better task scheduler because my laptop is a powerhog but other than that I'm inclined to prefer win10. and I do need windows for work. a few years ago I did use linux almost exclusively but windows is better because of the office suite and because of videogames.
-
@tae I can respect that....I'm a PC gamer too when I have the time, but I find nowadays I'm not nearly as much of one as I used to be. I'm happy to just putter around the web and watch some Youtube
LibreOffice isn't bad for an office suite though, and it's Microsoft compatible.
I'd say you're fine to stick with Win10 (I run Win10 Pro on my desktop PC, Linux Mint on my 'DD' laptop and MX Linux on my 'tinkering' laptop) for awhile yet. No need to rush into an upgrade to Win11 when 10 is still supported for ages.
I imagine you could find some FOSS Task Scheduler software that might be improved over the default Win10 one if you wanted to stick to Win10 for awhile? I know an IT friend of mine used to use one called 'Task Til Dawn' which was free...think he's still using it? He likes it because it's a lot more intuitive than the stock Windows one.
-
@Jarrett I mean if a CPU lasts you ten years you're not getting the bad end of the deal tbh.
-
@RallyDarkstrike I'm used to the "format as table" function in excel and as far as I know it's not available in libreoffice.
would a 3rd party scheduler work well with my laptop if I have a discrete graphics card? sometimes windows supposedly uses the CPU to have some programs ready to run.

Not sure! I just know he was using it on his home desktop and his desktop PC at the office

MaOS approves.
Honestly, I hate the Mac Dock, and I have it banished to the side, as small as possible, and hidden at all times. I never use it for anything.

you can move the taskbar to either side via a regedit but unfortunately it breaks it and none of the icons display so you just get a blank taskbar, hopefully they fix this soon

Then I won't be upgrading until forced to
Thanks!

@RallyDarkstrike They will turn into an army of Linux-based HTPCs!

I'd rather that at least as then they'd still be put to good use! I currently have an HP Elitedesk 800 G1 mini-PC that I use as an HTPC in our rec room running Linux Mint!
-
@RallyDarkstrike I'd give Linux a shot except that I have like eight computers that I use regularly. The biggest "specialty" software requirement I have is Adobe CS6 and Photoshop Light Room.
-
@tae Agreed. I've been able to get away with it for so long because I haven't upgraded beyond 1080p60. This means I can still play most games on high settings at excellent FPS.
-
@Jarrett unless you have a very large display 1080p is a good resolution. Since you cite a "K" on the processor I suppose you're on desktop but anyways it's not like the processor is the bottleneck there.
-
@RallyDarkstrike Afaik you can bring up command prompt during the install and tell it to ignore the TPM and CPU requirements, and it'll install just fine

I've never heard that one. Kindof doubt it, but I'd be interested in the details if you could find them again!
-
@tae yup! Desktop for life! My 1070 is definitely the limiting factor here. I'm using a 24 inch monitor but I want to move towards 32 inch this year
-
@RallyDarkstrike There's several guides for it online, I think there's an official Microsoft support page showing how to turn the check off in Regedit as well... I'll have to look for it when I get home. But, yeah, you can install W11 on whatever you want pretty much, that's what I did on my laptop.
-
@RallyDarkstrike I just ignored another upgrade prompt before seeing this post, and am glad to know that I can continue in ignorance until 2025 or when I replace my laptop, whichever is sooner. Thanks!

@EssExTee Putting the taskbar on the side is the best way to increase vertical space without having to turn on auto hide.
