Still got Campervans on my mind
-
I haven't found anything acceptable to the wife-y, but thien this popped up from an old movie and... I can't say that I hate it, exactly....
It would tip over with just the slightest provocation, but stilll... it's kind of glorious.

Winnebago 15 years ago: "We have this new one, it's based on a Sprinter. It's a Mercedes! Van! And we turned it into a camper. 22mpg! And easy to drive! Isn't that cool? Under $100k, too! Please come see it."
World 15 years ago: crickets
World today: I HAVE $300K CAN U PLZ MAKE ME VAN FOR INSTAGRAM??!
I would strongly wait for the market to cool down. There are a ton of Class B vans selling for Class A prices right now, it's nuts.
-
@ash78 Oh yeah, I'm already starting to see a glut of the larger RVs being solve for under $10k. I suppose that has to do with the price of gas and the target demographic living on fixed incomes..... Those are just too big for what we want to do. Sitting tight.
-
@Mr-Ontop I don't hate it either, but I don't LUV it.

Top speed 30mph..

@drVanTraveler That's optimistic!
-
@Shop-Teacher With a tail wind, it would be much higher.
-
@Mr-Ontop 35?
-
@drVanTraveler 37 at least!

@Mr-Ontop IMHO if you want a driveable (not towable) then a Class C if you have 3+ people. Class B is nice for 2 people because it can go everywhere, but even with just 2 people always felt like a lot of compromise for the money. I'd still lean toward a C, or a trailer for even more flexibility.
Funny about Class A motorhomes being so affected by gas prices. A little ironic when people spend $300k-$500k and accept the idea of getting 7mpg, then get miffed when gas doubles in cost
Besides, that's just an incentive to stay in one place for longer. Still pretty low in the overall scheme of your expenses (unless you're constantly on the road).
-
@ash78 Yeah, we're good with just having a nice place to sleep, as long as the campground has a shower etc. I think those class As are just ridiculous. They are nice, but for me, it kind of misses the entire point.
-
@Mr-Ontop My soul searching on this has led me to the singular question:
Do you see an RV as an upgrade from a tent, or do you see it as a flexible hotel room?
I'm in the first camp (ha ha), my wife is in the second. So we still don't have one
-
@ash78 The other day someone posted a conversion mini van that I thought was just perfect except that it had 247K miles on it. I just don't like sleeping on the ground, so just a platform in a van is good for me. The rest of the stuff is just fine if it can be packed in easily.

my class b (still for sale, btw
) is what got me to enjoy camping; being able to sleep in relative comfort was a game changer.

@ash78 Westfalia enters the chat :"Hallo, Winnebago, vee have done dis zince
Neunzenhundert1977 ... " -
@Darkbrador if only all of the Westfalia vans weren't priced as though they were made of gold, that might be an option.
-
In the Bay Area, that's a $500k mother-in-law unit in self-delivering form.
The camper is cute as a bug's ear, though aside from aerodynamics, I hope they made it out of something more competent for that wind and vibration environment (and a hell of a lot lighter) than wood and shingles, and just cleverly evoked the appearance of a house...

@Mr-Ontop
If I was to have a camper van. it'll have to either be a
VW T6 Doubleback.
Ford Transit Custom camper with MSRT bodykit
VW Grafter
But I prefer hotels, so it would literally be somewhere to sleep for a night or two.
