You would think they’d change something…

In the modern world when something goes wrong or an incident happens people discuss it and why it happened. Following lots of thought steps are taken to rectify any issues that could prevent something similar happening again…or so you would think.
You may remember that a few weeks ago I fell over because I’d lost feeling in my legs sat in a school assembly and had yet more ankle injuries and you might think that steps would be taken to make sure nobody else has the same problem - clearly not after today.
We had an hour and a half long assembly today with a motivational speaker (it was rather enjoyable) and as soon as we walked in seeing no chairs I knew that it wasn’t going to end well.
After half an hour of amusement they needed someone to go up and answer some questions and as none of the other cowards wanted to do it I volunteered and was told to get up.
I stood up (I took that as a success) and when I tried to walk forward my leg just shook a lot and I couldn’t move. Cue the rest of the year group (200 people) taking it as an exude to have a good laugh - but I don’t care and won’t spend the week crying over it.
After successfully completing the questions and getting a prize I went back to where I was (as fast as I could without falling over) and waited out the last hour of the assembly sitting through the boring notices about uniform and attendance.
When it was time to leave the exact same thought as last time: do I wait until I can feel my legs or just try and get up and deal with it? As I never seem to learn from my mistakes I went with the latter and as soon as I was almost stood up I fell over - of course I did, what else did you expect?
There was nothing I could do except sit and wait because I couldn’t go anywhere and just had to wait until I could move (takes longer than you think). During this time the pair of business teachers (lovely, lovely people) came to see if I was alright and tried to start a conversation (sort of worked, I wasn’t really in the mood for it but I was polite).
After what felt like an age of waiting with everyone staring and wondering what was going on I managed to get up and was sent to the medical office despite not having much wrong apart from a few things a bit painful and bruised (not my choice, but I suppose they had to be cautious).
So it seems that nobody learnt from last time and nothing will change for everyone else (they have offered me the option of a chair for assemblies but I don’t know if I want the staring) and I don’t know what to say. What will it take for them to learn that sitting cross-legged for long periods of time isn’t good for anyone?

I don't know what country you live in, but in the U.S. that would almost certainly be grounds for a lawsuit for students with disabilities, even if it is just a temporary disability, especially if the school were already aware of the condition yet continued not to make an accommodation.
-
@Gabriella why do you all sit on the floor for an hour and a half long motivational speech?
can you not afford chairs?
(granted any speech at work over 30 minutes where i have a chair just means i fall asleep....but when i dont i stand)
whats the added value of sitting everyone on the floor?i mean..i used to be able to do it for hours......but i was never required to by school.....coz....they had chairs
-
@Gabriella A chair would make you stand out? Are they making you sit on the floor for these? That seems odd for students your age?
In any event, it might be that certain styles of sitting might not work well for you. I always hated sitting "Indian-style" (now called criss-cross applesauce, which is a pretty terrible replacement name), and avoided it whenever I could. Didn't learn until I was in my 30s that I have very tight hips so doing it was way more stressful for me than it would have been for others.
Regardless, if you are being made to sit in a way that makes it so you can't walk when you get up without a risk of falling, they should work out something else for you.

@Gabriella I'd stand until chairs were provided, and if they don't like it they should provide some goddamn chairs. What a bunch of dipshits the event planners/administration are.

@Mr-Ontop
She's in the UK and yes, they have plenty of lawyers there too! -
@Cé-hé-sin I've also heard it said they have "health and safety wombles" for whatever value that would be... It's definitely health, maybe safety too (with injuries from falls).
-
@Cé-hé-sin Maybe her parents could fire a warning shot before unleashing the hounds.

See, now that would mean people (as a group) are smart and we all know that's not the case.

I blame some of my bad posture on years of slouching on the floor of primary school assemblies but by the time we hit high school (year 7) the hall was by default full of black plastic chairs. I know you're out in the boonies with cows wandering the halls and all that but what the F?
I mean if they're bothered about having to clear them in and out for PE just have every kid take a chair.
You definitely need some kind of accomodation that doesn't single you out and also maybe a specialist as that's worrisome. -
@Gabriella you’re school is full of assholes and cheapskates. Buy chairs and stop laughing ya idiots!!!
-
@Gabriella I don't know the norms on your side of the pond, but I think if you're old enough to try karting then you're probably old enough that a school shouldn't be telling you to sit on the floor anymore.
-
This is easy. And don’t go straight to the “I’m going to sue you” route. That’s why we can’t have nice stuff anymore.
Just do what works best for you and if they don’t like it tell them to fuck off. It’s not like you’re in prison.

Easy solution: sit on a cow?

@Old-Busted-Hotness only works if it's raining though...

@Mr-Ontop I don’t think we have anyone with disabilities but about five people have chairs for some reason (I don’t know what that reason is but there is one). I don’t think it’s worthy of a lawsuit, is it?
-
@farscythe We had chairs when I started there about four years ago but last year they got rid of them and made everyone sit on the floor? I say got rid of them but you could see them hung up from sitting on the floor. It’s alright for five to ten minutes but any longer and it never ends well.
-
@facw They have now suggested that I sit on a chair along with a few others who do for some reason. I did that for a bit before when I had my leg in a splint but I always felt really awkward so I’m not sure whether to take them up on their offer.
-
@bbg2d It’s not the most sensible suggestion to get rid of all the chairs but I’m not the one to stand up in protest because I always do whatever I’m told by the teachers and follow the rules.
-
@Mr-Ontop Is this supposed to be a silly joke about Brits who live in rural areas? (I hope it is, I thought it funny)
-
@WasGTIthenGTOthenNOVAthenGTInowA4 You can hope!
-
@zipfuel It’s not even the PE hall, it’s the hall that never gets used apart from assembly! Also, there’s not many cows round here. More sheep and cabbages. I’m always losing feeling in my legs (sometimes when I’m not sat on the floor) so maybe I do need to find out why.
-
@Taylor-Martin They have the chairs but they won’t use them. This is the ridiculousness of it, you can see the chairs when you are sat there but they never get used!
-
@Zymosan Yes but I don’t like to make a fuss. One person was shouting at the teacher to change the chair situation when it was announced whereas I just sat and began to dread the end of the assembly. I don’t see the point in suing anyone.

@Gabriella
You might need that checked out. Losing feeling after sitting down is ok if you recover quickly after getting up but just randomly losing feeling may not be good.
