Even in this market, nobody wants Maseratis or 970 Pannys

A top notch mechanic nearby who also sells cars has had an immaculate, low mileage '06 Quattroporte for sale for well over a year, for $15k. It's a good year for the car too, as it has the 6-speed ZF.
They also have a 2012 V6 Panamera with 130k miles on it. It was first listed at $32k, then dropped to $29k. Most recently it was on carsandbids with a reserve placed at their cost for the car. It was bid up to $15k, and didn't sell.
I drive by these cars every time I go into town. I do occasionally think about offering a lowball for the Maser, but then I come to my senses.
-
@Saracen I want both of these cars, but no matter how cheap either gets, even in factory fresh shape, I know it's a horrible idea.
-
@Saracen The V6 panamera should be no problem, at least engine wise.
-
@Saracen I wonder how bad running costs on that Quattroporte could be.
-
I think the solution is to buy the the Quattroporte for $13k, drive it hard for one year, and then...

fiery death + insurance fraud.

I literally just learned (like last week) that the V6 first-gen Cayenne was the VW VR6. I had avoided the V6 MT Cayenne and only held out hope for the Cayenne GTS 6MT (daydreaming), but something about the V6 variant being the VR6 makes it much more appealing.
-
@e90m3 Probably even up with how boring they are to drive
-
@Tripper Never actually driven one.
-
@Tripper Sounds pretty glorious though.
-
@HammerheadFistpunch PDK is the big ticket item on these. I'm pretty sure they are still only serviceable by ZF which would mean you have to get a new transmission if there is anything wrong that requires opening the case. But it seems they're pretty reliable so long as fluid is changed regularly. Sensors go out more than anything.
The V8 of that same modular engine family had some reports of bore score, but I don't know of any issues with the V6...aside from the fact that it is fairly unexciting (driven a few Porsches with that engine and I can attest).
@Tripper @e90m3 I can say even base V6 Pannys have incredible handling, but I still wouldn't bother with it...especially when I'm smitten with Sport Turismos.
-
@WasGTIthenGTOthenNOVAthenGTInowA4 That's all they got imo. Maybe I should have put "any Maserati that isn't a super/hyper car" on your irrational hatred thread. They don't feel good/fast and I think they look awful, like a gussied up Buick...They sound great because "Ferrari" engine, which is the first thing out of the mouth of the phonies that took out a second mortgage to buy one.
*rapper machine gun noises -
@Saracen I was only referring to the Maserati
-
@flatisflat yep, 3.2 liter VR6. The 3.6 is from Porsche's modular engine family. Not to be confused with the 3.6 VR6 that had been used in some VW's until recently..
-
@Tripper I had a boss who had a Quattroporte. They're pretty great to drive. Just have no resale due to the reputation of insane maintenance costs. Though this one would be a little better since it doesn't have that sequential gearbox that ate clutches on a yearly basis.
Having said that, I'd never touch done because yeah, they're all junk.
-
@Saracen I wasn't impressed but I also don't like them by default. The last time I drove one was 4-5 years ago. I drove it back to back with another colleagues v12 S class and like the Merc by a landslide. The trip was however only 8 miles.
-
@davesaddiction it's Italian...drive it hard enough and it will self immolate for you. No insurance fraud required.
-
@Qaaaaa Not necessarily. I daily a Panamera that now has 90k+ miles, it runs & looks like brand new, and it's been flawless mechanically. Only wear parts and consumables, it's rock solid.
The Maserati on the other hand ... nope.
-
@Darkbrador yes, but did you pay 15k for your panamera?
-
@Qaaaaa Understood, however the market value doesn't reflect the actual condition/history of the car. Depreciation is your friend, the Panamera is maligned by "purists" and "enthusiasts", and it's an "entry level".
Look at it this way : it all plays in your favor, the stars are aligned ...
-
@Darkbrador yeah, I would have no concerns dailying a Panamera. This one just isn't one I want.
-
@Saracen now all of a sudden the Panamera is on my radar... Thanks lol.
-
@Saracen they both sound overpriced. That in US dollars? You can get a 2012 Panamera with half those miles for just about that price.
-
@Sovande 29k is about right, and if they're selling it at cost now then it's a very good buy.
-
@davesaddiction Bit dramatic there, just have one of your cousin's friends steal it and dispose of it for you, split the insurance check
-
Ferrari engine. Fire is more believable.
