      https://www.thirdway.org/report/the-red-state-murder-problem

      From the article:

      • The rate of murders in the US has gone up at an alarming rate. But, despite a media narrative to the contrary, this is a problem that afflicts Republican-run cities and states as much or more than the Democratic bastions.

      • In 2020, per capita murder rates were 40% higher in states won by Donald Trump than those won by Joe Biden.

      • 8 of the 10 states with the highest murder rates in 2020 voted for the Republican presidential nominee in every election this century.

      Elsewhere in the article:
"In fact, the homicide rate in Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco was half that of House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy’s Bakersfield, a city with a Republican mayor that overwhelmingly voted for Trump. Yet there is barely a whisper, let alone an outcry, over the stunning levels of murders in these and other places."

@bison78 I would like to see a version of this story that controlled for not just state rates but city/state splits to see if the difference is only in the cities in Republican controlled states. My hypotheses is that Democratically controlled cities in Republican controlled states are underfunded by the state and therefore have higher murder rates.

Just a guess that would need research not provided here. I do believe that the analysis provided would be stronger if they controlled for more factors, but maybe they did but did not disclose that.

@JeRC1500 I agree that this needs more data. Typical "think tank" crap where they produce a study so that a wealthy donor can prove a political point without a lot of underlying analysis.

I think this goes both ways. Calling out Bakersfield is exactly that. It's basically the reddest city in CA and it's been underfunded (especially education, police, and drug enforcement) for decades. The place is a shithole full of methheads and if you ask any voter in SF or LA about it, they will say "Fuck Trumpersfield". Largely, Californians enjoy kicking Bakersfield right in the nuts because of how it votes.

Pelosi's district on the other hand, has the benefit of every doubt and a media household income of $120,290 compared to Bakersfield at $62,402.

@JeRC1500 Probably depends where you live. In Arizona, which is red outside of the big cities, the cities get most of the funding. Our most poorly funded areas are definitely the Indian reservations, but that’s a federal issue and they’re generally blue and extremely rural (for the ones not near Phoenix).

However, I think you’re spot on with Midwest and Southern states. Louisiana and Alabama have the worst murder rates in the country, and that’s largely due to New Orleans and Birmingham, which I believe are “blue” cities. Race is probably a big factor influencing funding in those regions.

@bison78 I think everyone is used to the violence in Bakersfield by now. My step grandfather was a cop in that area back in the day. He was also in a motorcycle “club” running drugs at the same time.
