Meanwhile, at the ER...
-
I have no idea what is going on here.
As for being at the ER, my son tried to cut his finger off with a pocket knife. I think we’ll be able to save the arm.
Some lessons are best learned empirically.
-
13-year old me with a pocket knife:
Runs blade across palm
"This isn't that sharp"
Runs blade across palm again
"Maybe it is"I also still have a scar on my thumb from opening my Leatherman one handed and not getting the blade I expected. Was a nice flap of skin that in hindsight I really should have gone to the hospital for, but college age me clearly wasn't so wise.
-
@ttyymmnn Yep, it is hard to stay outside your own "circle of blood".
-
Out of all the cub scouts in my den, it was my son who cut himself while opening his knife. I was working with another kid who afraid to open his knife, so I dismissed my son’s first few attempts to get my attention. Then I turned around and saw the blood.

-
@facw I've got an inch long scar on the web of my left thumb from the time Kid Me learned you're supposed to cut AWAY from you.
-
I once took down a good deal of dropped ceiling by trying to use it as a step. Don't.
Also, your son will persevere and learn some lessons from this. It builds character
-
@facw I blame his uncle who gave him the knife and didn’t get a lock blade.
-
@forsweden "Could you just... move a little bit... trying to give somebody the Evil Eye. Thanks. Thank you!"
Koyaanisqatsi resumes
-
@ttyymmnn Hope your son didn't do any permanent damage.
Also he's up there fighting rats in mortal combat. I used to work for a restoration company that would come in and clean up and repair after water/fire and so on. The most disgusting places I have ever been in was a hospital. I'm not even counting the germs/sick people ickiness.
This was a major regional hospital, that's regularly ranked in the top batch of hospitals for this or that nationally. There were rats the size of cats in the ceiling and in the basement (never go into a hospitals basement!!!) there were cockroaches the size of small rats.

Don't ever give a kid a non-locking blade knife. Yes swiss army knives are awesome, but I still have scars from closing one on my hand 25 years ago. When the kid gets old enough he can have a non-locking blade if he wants one.
-
@jminer Well, he’s 18, but our family in general doesn’t have much experience with knives.
-
@jminer Hospitals are a great place to get sick.

I thought your son was grown! Hope he's OK. Will he need more than stitches?
I just gave my 8yr old a pocket knife (and accompanying safety lesson). Now you've got me worried.
-
@ttyymmnn Oof... Yeah, some lessons you just have to learn yourself. Hope you're in and out quick. Urgent care wouldn't have been sufficient for this one?
-
@ibrad Thanks. No major damage. Just a flesh wound. A tetanus shot and some stitches (and a $150 copay) will take care of it.
-
@ttyymmnn Good to hear!
-
As for what's going on there, either electrical or plumbing work. Working inside dropped ceilings is always fun /s.

I don't even use a non-locking blade and I've carried a knife every day for over 25 years. I have one swiss army knife that my grandfather gave me when I was like 9 (that I cut myself by closing it on my hand).
Everything I actually use is either a fixed blade or locking.

Probably would have been. Didn’t think about it. We only waited about 15 minutes before they called us back.
-
My sister’s brand new ER burst a water main right at the beginning of our first covid wave. Good times were had.

Better luck next time?
