Not a good look, ppl... We need to do better...

As someone in day 5 of COVID-19 symptoms, I have to honestly tell you that I thought I was being cautious enough. I've been back at work full time since July 7, and we have 100% mask policy there with physical distancing... I wear a mask, disinfect, and wash my hands often when out in public. I still got stung by the virus...
Just look at the fucking green curve... It's not good, y'all.
-
Yup, just another check-mark in the "masks don't work worth a shit" column. If you are around someone who is coughing or has coughed in the space you are now occupying you are screwed unless you are wearing a positive pressure suit.
-
@thedutchtexan Masks are pretty effective for preventing you infecting somebody else. They’re a lot less useful for preventing somebody else infecting you.
Unfortunately, people are selfish a-holes.
-
^ that. They work, if worn properly (too many people don't seem to realize noses are part of the respiratory system) but no system is perfect if you're indoors for a while with someone who has it.
That's a major bummer @doodon2whls. Sending good thoughts your way and hope recovery goes well!

@thedutchtexan
Masks aren't a 100% solution, but they one of several countermeasures... I don't think anyone thinks they are a 100% solution. -
@doodon2whls most of the people getting it now are wearing masks. So I'd argue they are having an opposite effect. Witnessing how people are wearing and treating them makes me wonder if those folk wouldn't be better off not wearing them. Constantly adjusting them, messing around with them, coughing in them because they think that mask stops the particles from escaping. Does it help? If properly worn probably some. But all the people I see are people screwing with them, wearing them wrong or wearing a clown mask that does absolutely nothing (99.9% wear clown masks). The funny thing is that nothing really changed for me. I avoided people who were coughing like the plague already, a bit of a germophobe. I'd stop the family and go back to that aisle at the end of the shopping trip. Now I am the only person getting groceries to limit exposure. I wear a motorcycle helmet by the way. Clown covering as well. I am not going to spend money on a clown mask if I already have one. Bonus? It does come with a built in face shield! LOL!
I really do hope the next establishment is not going to be dumb enough to lock everything down again. It didn't do jack then, won't do jack now. Other than pushing people further down the path of financial ruin, substance abuse, improper medical care and suicide. I honestly believe the greatest issue isn't COVID. It's everything else surrounding it. There is a vaccine now, in the next few months there will be distribution of that vaccine that is supposedly 90% effective. Before you are asking: Nope, not getting it. Not because I am an anti vaxxer, but because I am anti rushed vaccines with political undertone. Let people who are afraid take it first and if they are fine I might consider it. I am still convinced the entire office was out with it in February. Everyone felt like crap, was home for a week and one of them got tested for flu. His test was negative. The doctor said it would be positive the next day. Now we looked at each-other and nod. We all got the 'Rona that week.

I was kind of surprised though. Last time I went for haircut last month there was quite a few people at the mall. So I said to the barber chick, "Why are there so many people here at the mall?", she just shrugged and was like "We just put on masks and go about."
Here we are a month later going through another soft lock down as cases have spiked like 4-5x from what it was in April. I'm against lockdowns, but fuck me. People just aimlessly and needlessly wandering about public places because they have a mask drives me batty.
The only grace being that we have some better knowledge of who it affects the worst and a bit better treatments for them.
-
@doodon2whls Any clue where or who you got it from?
-
@thedutchtexan I'm honestly a little worried about the vaccine as I have an immunological disorder where I can't immunize properly. I'm afraid at some point I might not be allowed to return to campus if I don't have it and we don't know any long term effects of it. It is a rush job and one that probably will work fine for most people. But that doesn't mean some people won't suffer ill effects in some special cases and it is more likely than not I would be in that category.
-
Pretty crazy that you got it with all those precautions. Hopes for a quick recovery. I've been teaching at three schools in person all year without contracting it yet. Zero in school transmission at any of the schools I'm at. And we're in a "hot zone".
-
@davesaddiction
Really no idea, Dave. I have been so careful not to 'contact' ppl in a way that would promote COVID transmission at work and home. I have been riding the mountain bike and road bike and motorcycle, but that is in clear air. More likely shopping or at work.I'm nearly fully recovered right now - I really turned the corner over the weekend. Just a few minor lingering symptoms and fatigue. Worked 7 hours Sunday and 9 hours today at my home office. Woooooooo...... And I managed to stay off of Oppo for 99% of the time which is more than I can say for my past WFH behavior pre-2015. LOL.
-
@doodon2whls Glad you're okay.
-
@davesaddiction Me too !
-
Yeah, its not looking good. -
@thedutchtexan yeah. no. take a look at the curve again and ask yourself the question - Why does one curve look so much different from the rest? It's not because of the sameness of mask inefficacy.
