Selling my mom’s Toyota Yaris…
-
Recently, my mom had her license taken away due to her eyesight not being good enough anymore.
My siblings and I are glad about this since we also feel she’s not fit to drive anymore.
So now it comes down to her car… a 2009 Toyota Yaris sedan with 79,594km on it as of today. It a 4 speed auto, AC, the original AM/FM radio with CD, power steering, power antilock brakes, a full set of floor mats, power windows, power mirrors
The good:
It’s a low mileage Yaris that was cared for, always garage kept, well maintained mechanically and aside from one spec in one spot, no rust. And all the main stuff works… abs, steering, brakes, engine all good. And no check engine lights. And the 1.5L 1NZ-FE 4 cyl starts up on the first shot and runs like it’s still new. And the AC still blows nice and cold. And no leaks of any kind either. (The drips you see on the driveway are me spraying WD40 into the passenger door and trunk lock mechanisms to try to free them up). And I’ve been driving it every so often to keep it healthy. The not so good:
It has a good number of minor dings and scratches. Also the passenger door and trunk key locks are seized up due to age and lack of use. This wasn’t an an issue for my mom since she’d only use the driver door lock and would always open the trunk using the interior trunk release. Also at some point the front passenger side wheel well plastic was removed. I suspect some mechanic removed it to do some service and never reinstalled it.
The battery is still good, but it’s 7 years old.
The back tires are newer than the front tires. I’d say the fronts have a year of life in them and the back ones at least 3 years.
And there is a little storage compartment on the drivers side that doesn’t stay closed properly anymore.
Before selling, I plan on giving it a wash and vacuum and taking it to Crappy Tire and get them to tell me what it needs for the safety certification (which is needed to register it in Ontario)
My questions to Oppo is… What is this car worth to you as it currently sits?
EDIT... in my area here and here are two examples of what similar ones are going for.
Have a look at the pictures:

@Manwich
Four door Yaris? New one to me. -
It's known as the Toyota Belta or Toyota Vios in other places.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Belta#North_America -
@Manwich Down here you could probably get at least $6k for it, which is insane.

You mean... insanely GOOD (for my mother anyway). LOL
Also note... my mom bought this for CAD$9000 plus tax (or about US$6750) in 2011.... US$750 in depreciation after 11 years and around 60,000km/37,000 miles... LOL

@Manwich low mileage Toyota in this market?
That they're asking 10k for that first one is horrifying and the other has nearly a quarter million km!
Some friends of ours were looking for a car for their teenager when I was getting rid of the Jetta, they very wisely passed on it but might still be on the market, let me know when you put it up.
EDIT: list it at what she paid for lulz -

Even in this market, I suspect these may be overpriced by at least $1000 since they're both used car dealers.
-
I would take to a trusted independent shop rather than Canadian Tire. Or even a dealership. You can likely get an aftermarket wheel liner from LKQ. Try to lubricate the locks to free them up. If you get it safetied you might get decent money at an auction - a friend did this and I was shocked how much she made without the hassles of the Facebook/Kijiji scammers. It looks like at least a $6000 car to me in Manitoba
-
@Manwich I don't know what it would be worth in your market, but that list of minor things missing or not working sounds highly worth some investment in sorting. Add in whatever can be achieved with compounding those scrapes and scuffs, that car is probably worth considerably more as a low-mileage example where everything works and is accounted for.

You know what? I just checked Kijiji and Craigslist and I'm thinking if it wasn't for the scratches and dings, I could probably ask CAD$10K for it. But with the scratches and all, maybe asking CAD$9000 might be the right place to start. Still want to find out what it needs to be certified. And if it needs nothing or just minor stuff like new front tires, I may very well get $9000 for it or close to it.
Might decide to advertise it with an as-is price and the price with the safety certification.

@Manwich
Did not know it was called the Yaris in the saloon bodystyle, I thought the saloon was called the Echo in North America. -
@Manwich have you popped the vin into CarMax for a quick quote?

Not really relevant since I'm in Canada and Carmax is a US outfit.
-
The battery is still good, but it’s 7 years old.
love this. you're "meant" to replace them every what, 3 years? but i've often found that a battery will last 7+ when it's paired with a small engine.
not worth replacing until they start giving you grief i reckon. -
@Manwich Svend it, fix the seized locks, replace the battery, and get a wheel well liner to replace the missing one, and you could ask $13k for it. Put new tires on, add $1k to the price.
-
@Manwich
Cool. Bringing them more in alignment across the network.
did you get the old Yaris Verso.
And do you get the new Yaris Cross?
-
@Manwich This looks like it'll be some teen's future first car. I say throw it on the market for $7.5k CAD.
-
My grandma would have scratches on her car and she said she didn't know where they came from... Maybe by the time I get there they will really have good automated systems.
-
@svend The Yaris Verso is a new one to me. Toyota wisely didn't send that to North America since they'd sell, what, maybe 12 in a good year? No more Yaris or Mazda2 here so no Yaris Cross.
-
@Manwich Maybe whichever outfit bought @CarsOfFortLangley's Forte? Just to get a baseline price even if you don't sell to them?
-
@Manwich Hmmm... $500 and I'll make it a LeMons car!
-
@Cé-hé-sin @Manwich It's also the main choice for the taxi fleet here, called Toyota Limo, even though it doesn't resemble a typical limo at all:
-
Not in Canada.
-
Well when I was in Havana Cuba, I had one taxi ride in a Tuk Tuk.
And in relation to a Tuk Tuk, a Yaris sedan would look and feel like a limo...
