I got a tune
-
After much hemming and hawing I finally bit the bullet and got a Polestar tune on my V60 and so far I am pretty impressed. Seems to have more power and the transmission seems a little more on-board with helping to actually move the car instead of just keeping the RPMs as low as possible.
Because my dealership is full of the incompetent, the whole thing did not go off without a hitch. The $140 discount I was promised when I booked the appointment was "no longer available." The service manager was not able to apply a different discount because, frankly, I don't think he felt like it. I was not in the mood to give a shit, so I nodded my head knowingly.
Before they began the process, and before they even had my keys I said to the service guy "I don't want a white Polestar badge. If you don't have blue (which would have ben on a car of my vintage) then don't put any badges. He said no problem and then tried to find the blue badge for me only to let me know they were not able to order one as it was out of production - not a problem, I can source one myself - he even tells me I can bring it by and they will install it with the template they have. Great. Until I walked outside and saw the white badge.
It's as though they can't help themselves. I wanted blue to match the new shifter knob I just installed to replace my old cracked one. Alas, I guess I will go at the badge with a heat gun and dental floss or simply learn to love it.

@Sovande dealers are always dealers aren't they.
Glad you like the tune though!

@jminer It's amazing. I am not kidding when I tell you I spent 10 minutes looking at the badges with the service guy. He went to the parts counter, made a fuss. But he didn't tell the tech doing the work. When he said he could get it off with a plastic razor blade I knew it was time to cut my losses.
I fully expected them to do something fishy or wrong, so this was no surprise and thus I was not even mad. New year, new me.

This is like when I bought my Si. I wanted to make sure there was no front plate bracket drilled into the front bumper, and Honda dealers around here are notorious for sticking pinstripes, door edge guards and mudflaps on every car they sell. I wanted no part of that shit. I went so far as to put a deposit on a car that was still in transit to make sure none of that shit got stuck on it. When the sales guy brought the car to my house after my achilles injury, there was a motherfucking dealership sticker on the trunk. I wasn't going to have him take it back to the fucking dealer to remove the sticker but I was pissed. Thankfully since it was so fresh I was able to easily remove it with my wife's hair dryer, goo gone, simple green, and quick detailer.

@sovande Here's another tune for your tune
-
-
@Sovande I pulled all the side badges off my car and it wasn't too bad. Fishing line or very delicate work with a (plastic not metal!) scraper will work okay usually, and then Goo Gone or the like and a gentle hand to clean it off.
-
@texturedsoyprotein This is a dealership that tried to screw me over so badly once that they called the police to get me out of the showroom when I began to voice my displeasure, so we have history. And I agree on no dealership stickers or plate frames. They don't pay me to advertise for them.
-
@sovande It’s like all dealerships will fuck at least one thing up. Better the sticker than the Polestar-ing.
When I bought my Veloster I told them no dealership anything. Did the walk around and they changed the plate bracket. I told them to put the other one on for two reasons. One, I specifically said no dealership shit, second, theirs would melt. The car comes with a giant sticker that warns the dealership and consumer of such.
When I bought my Jeep I said no dealership stuff. Did the walk around and stickers and plate holder on there. I made them take it back inside, remove their crap, wash and detail the entire thing inside and out before I would accept it. My anger can provide a lot of “patience” to get what I asked for. I went over the vehicle with metaphorical white gloves at that point. Much to the salesman’s dismay.

@sovande Is it just me or did they not even put it on right? Looks too close to the '5' IMO

Thanks for reminding me that my wife calls it "Goo-Be-Gone"
Now I call it that too -
@spacekraken I've always used dental floss for that task

How much was the tune (if you don't mind saying?). I've lightly considered doing it for my S60 (I'm shocked that they even offer anything for a 2006). Seems likely the Hilton tune is much cheaper ($350-$575 depending on options), but even that seems like a lot for a car I only paid $4000 for and would like to replace sometime soon (and to be honest, I don't have high confidence in it mechanically).

Yup, I was going to say it's crooked.
-
@texturedsoyprotein For some reason, unlike just about every other car that the dealership sold, mine didn't have their sticker or logo plastered on it and for that I was extremely grateful.
I remember when my dad went to pick up his 525i and saw the dealer's info plastered on the back of it. Before he turned over the check he asked how much the dealer was going to pay him to advertise for them. They quickly took the car to the back and cleaned it off...
-
@ibrad Its not as bad in person. Except for the fact that in 2016 the badge was square and on the other side of the T5 emblem. I'm sure I'll change it at some point soon.
-
@facw It was $1400. Which is an absurd amount of money to pay for a tune on a 4 cylinder car, but here we are. I thought about Hilton but it ends up being more money and more work since you have to load it, data log with Vida, etc and I didn't feel like going through the trouble. I am not sure what he charges for your generation.
Elevate is plug and play for $740. Not a bad deal.

This guy tuned my C30 and it was a monster. Also $750

Update: The tune is a hoot. I also finally was able to find what turned out to be the hardest car part I have ever sourced. It cost me $25 and is used and faded, but correct for my year. Plus it looks a lot cooler than the white one the dealership did a crappy job applying.

That looks MUCH better.

@trivet Thanks. I was able to find that badge by posting on a Volvo site and basically begging. A guy had one that had been in his glove box for 2 years (!) since he had removed it, and he still wanted $25 for it.

Worth.

@sovande Awesome that you finally got it done, and I'm glad you're loving it!
