Plausible deniability: a curse and a blessing (updated)
-
Update: Here's what John Kelly had to say today about Trump's incitement.
He also said that were he on the Cabinet he would vote to remove Trump from office via the 25th amendment.
One reason Trump has managed to slither through the decades without accountability is his ability to make his wishes obvious to his sycophants without actually saying anything that could be used against him in a court of law.
As others have observed, he very much has mastered the art of sounding like a mob boss.
It seems clear to me that he would be happy with a violent insurrection that gave him an excuse to stay in office longer. He literally has no concerns for anything but himself, and probably his family, although I'm skeptical about the depth of that commitment.
However, his years of practice at plausible deniability failed him this week. He can't explicitly ask his millions of followers to come to DC and torch the rest of the government. He can't ask his followers to assassinate his enemies.
Does anyone really think he would shed a tear if a joint session of Congress was blown up via a truck bomb yesterday?
He just can't bring himself to expose himself that nakedly by asking for it, so the Proud Boys and all of his other militia friends are just unsure enough of what would happen in a real civil war, despite their posturing, to not be willing to put themselves out there so decisively.
I fear for what happens when the next demagogue arrives who's actually sufficiently competent at governing, and thus isn't voted out of office, or who isn't shy about demanding chaos instead of just hinting at it.

Also, Carly reminding us of his anti-government rhetoric. "Liberate Michigan!"

Anyone involved in NY real estate has to know how to play that game.

Yesterday was the first time in my life I seriously began to consider owning a gun. I feel we are officially past reason.

@dipodomysdeserti And it's insane to think anyone involved in NY/NJ real estate development in the 70s and 80s didn't have mob ties. More of 45's past that needs an audit.
Regarding the OPs post, smart voters need to ensure that demagogue never assumes power. 2016 should be a lesson to both parties.
-
@flatisflat I understand that feeling.

@flatisflat I bought my first gun shortly after the 2016 election, my second not long after as a carry weapon. I rarely carry (I have a CC permit and open carry is legal in the state as well) but there are days I bring it with me. Today is one of those days.
As RTJ put it
The petty kind might kill ya 'cause they see ya shine (stay strapped)

I'm pretty confident he would have issued more or less this same tweet, unless some attentive aide was able to hide his phone first:
