Akio's 2020 Year in Review (AKA 2020 wasn't so bad for me)

But only for me, apparently.
While I'm not usually one to do these EOY posts, 2020 has been significant in a lot of ways. Most of them positive but with one glaring, overbearing monster of a negative.
January 2020 Status Report
In January 2020 I was unemployed, having been laid off in August, but I had promises of a new job on the horizon. Usually I'd dismiss such, but I have distinct memories of filling out pre-job paperwork on Christmas Day so... for once I think this was real.
Other than that, the fleet was mostly healthy, iirc. The Alfa was mostly neglected but running well. The Saab was the Saab. The Land Rover had just got a new set of tires and been on a road trip all over New Mexico for NYE. The Volvo was as blue and reliable as ever. Only the Jaaaaaag remained a problem child, but it was also a very new project so that isn't shocking.
All told, things were a little grim in January 2020, but they had promises of being better soon.
GOOD NEWS! I got a start date for my new, dream, job. In late January I packed up my bags and headed to the new HQ to do my onboarding and get my laptop. It was here that I learned my new position was to be 100% work from home, not office based like I'd thought. I was a little bummed about this, I'd never done extended work from home before, but immediately started making plans to remodel my home office.
Also the Saab gets a new battery and fuel accumulator!
The Renegade breaks down on the freeway and I have to preform an emergency rescue in a rental car.
Finally received a keyboard phone I'd been waiting on for months and I hated it.
I met my new coworkers in person for the first time! Also got some keyboard time doing what is now my job! Also all my coworkers (save one) were fit, young, and didn't drink. Shit. Ok well I'm not going to be the fat guy on the team, so I started keto. Bad choice to do while out of town during flu season, but I made it.
Another op with the new team! Really getting to know them better and liking it so far. At the very end of the event we were shaking hands with the hosting org and I had my first "should we really be doing this?" thought. Shaking hands, that is. There was this new virus going around that might get ugly. This was the last "normal" thing I did.
Also I finished my office remodel. We'd opted to turn our "master bedroom," which we'd been using as an office as it is MASSIVE, into three rooms using temporary walls. On one end I'd have my office, on the other my partner's, and in the middle our respective workbenches, printers, and a sitting area.
The Jag got a new front bumper after my neighbor grazed it while parking. Slowly working on fixing the poor kitty, but it really needed to be taken down for extended maintenance.
Also the start of lockdown. Turns out that virus thing we'd been hearing about at the beginning of the month was (A) real and (B) a big deal. Now we have to figure out how to live remote only...
Broke lockdown for the first time. First for a junkyard run for the Landy (scored a CDL linkage!!) and then to Costco for needed supplies. This my also my first time wearing a mask in public and it felt like I was pulling off a caper.
Hail storm takes out the Disco, Renegade, and my house's roof.
Jag goes under the knife for extensive maintenance.
Alfa gets a pre-Track Day shakedown.
I take the Land Rover out for my first socially distant offroading event.
I start making masks as the CDC reverses its opinion on them. (Hey remember when masks didn't help?)
All of the Jag's pulleys are messed up and either expensive or difficult to procure. I end up pressing in new bearings, thereby learning a new life skill. I also learn why you don't buy cars from the north, as a lost several days trying to get rusted brake pins out.
Track day with the Alfa was amazing, but the head gasket let go at lunch. Traded it for the Volvo and finished out track day strong.
Jag got a supercharger pully upgrade.
Taylor (road trip buddy) decided to quarrenteam with us for a week or two, just to get out of the house.
Near the end of the month I got the Jag back on the road and all was well... briefly.
The Saab got a new distributor and new valve cover gasket.
Saab got a wideband AF meter installed.
I bought a bicycle and earned the ire of biking Oppo.
My partner cut my hair.
The Saab's secondary fuel pump failed for the third or fourth time, so I finally dropped the tank to clean it.
I saw a Lancer Wagon at the junk yard.
The Jag's dome light died, necessitating replacment of the whole damn module. Also something in the fiber loop died, taking the nav and HVAC with it.
I bought another bicycle, earning me further ire.
I found paper towels for sale.
I replaced some coolant elbows on a friends car and reinstalled his supercharger belt.
First pandemic work trip was a drive to the middle of nowhere in a rented Ford Fusion. Ended up being an awesome, safe trip.
Jag's AC dies suddenly.
I bought yet another bicycle. This one people actually were OK with.
Drive out to New Mexico in the Land Rover for work. Weird vibration on the way out has me worried, but it makes the trip fine. Meet up with IA97 for some socially distant offroading. Get propositioned by a coworker while we're drinking. Good work trip. I run out of gas on the way home.
First real hair cut since February!
3rd bike rebuild goes well and is my new favorite.
Fly for the first time since January. It is... weird.
Got to see a hanger designed for the Hindenburg. Also the site where it crashed. Sad but very cool.
Bigly steak. (2 inch thick porterhouse)
Physically distant camping!
Hunt down the problems with the Jag's AC. Turns out to be a bad (recently replaced) aux coolant pump. FML. Bypass it and all is good, again.
Sell one of my bicycles and more or less break even. Good project.
Fly again for work. Still weird. My sole remaining N95 is looking worse for wear.
Painter starts work on my house. This will take several months and 5-figures of cash.
Taylor comes into town again, this time towing his D21 for some deep maintenance. It was fun!
Halloween! We did a small, outdoor only party.
D21 maintenance concludes. We did a good.
I build out a home IT lab after drunkenly buying some equipment on eBay.
We get to go in the mysterious shut-in's house across the street. She was moved to state custody and there was an estate sale. It was all very sad.
New phone! Oh wait it sucks must return.
OG Oppo is stuck down by a herb. The Hyphen emerges to carry the torch.
An old Oppo post gets shared to the DriveTribe front page!
Land Rover fixes.
New phone again! I think this one is a keeper!
Volvo gets a check engine light.
Have a less COVID-safe actual Christmas
Quarranteam Offroad road trip!!
So... not so bad
It has been an interesting year to say the least, but I am fortunate that it has worked out overall.
A lot of people are putting their faith in 2021, but not so I. I think it has a chance of being better than 2020, but also feel it is more likely 2020 was the warm up round. Fingers crossed I am proved wrong.
The biggest thing I'm looking forward to in 2021 in our next cheap car challenge. TBD if we can actually pull it off this year, but I'm still shooting for it.
Also sort of looking forward to selling the Jag, but that is still many months out.
Lastly, looking forward to hopefully getting the garage remodeled and a lift put in. I've got half the cash sorted and if I get a good price for the Jag I'll start putting it out for bids next month.
I don't know what unexpected adventures 2021 will bring, but I look forward to executing them safely.

I found paper towels for sale.
Glad your year went mostly well. I can say the same, thankfully.
Here's to a far superior 2021 for all of OPPO.

Here's to another successful and fun year! *raises coffee cup * I've very much enjoyed your cheap car challenges in the past and I look forward to following along for another one.
It seems 2020 didn't treat you unkindly overall. The Jag really was a big turnaround from its original condition.

I also feel like 2020 wasn't a completely shit year for me. It ended up A LOT different than it started (I was planning a temporary move to Shanghai on Feb 1st - LOL) but it could've been a lot worse. It feels kinda shameful to say that in the company of others though.

2020 ended up being decent for me. I left my dead end retail job after far too long to go to work for a major automotive company, and I ended the year buying my dream car. But in between there was lots of turmoil and I ended up in the emergency room one night in February after smoking too much weed and having a panic attack. I haven’t touched the stuff since.
