An update to avoiding mines in Ukraine
-
Here is an update to how they are avoiding the mines on the road in Ukraine. Apparently you can kick them off the road. This was discussed the other day and we were speculating that they could be just moved off of the road.

Good to know, but it still takes balls to do that.
-
@Highlander Why not a really long push broom. Like one from a pool.

@krustywantout A mine sweeper?
-
@Highlander
Top tip: don't lift the mines. They have anti tamper devices and go off if lifted. -
-
@krustywantout
Those are anti tank mines. They go off with a really big bang. You're going to need a really long pole. -
@Highlander Oh yes that is actually true for certain types. We found all kinds of old Russian stuff in Afghanistan. If we found anything in significant numbers EOD would deal with it.
-
@Cé-hé-sin Something like that would have a pretty stiff pressure switch but who knows how old that shit is, Russian gear is old. We saw stuff used in the 80s in Afghanistan but they were made sometimes in the 60s.

I watched a Discovery show about Navy EOD guys, mostly dealing with IEDs. While some of it was pretty intense, and made more so by the nature of the TV show, there also seemed to be lots and lots of time sitting still and doing nothing. So. Much. Waiting. Still, it’s a job I could never do, so mad props to those guys.
-
@Cé-hé-sin The good news is that, aside from the anti-tamper device, it also takes a fair bit of weight/pressure to set one off.
-
-
@ttyymmnn Oh yeah its nuts, at least we have really great robots now with amazing dexterity. But its all crazy, all this over some people that can't get along so they make all these fancy toys to kill the other.
-
@Skyfire77 Stop screaming, I'm scared too
-
@Highlander
Is this where curling actually comes in real world handy? -

@Chariotoflove Ukraine sweeps all categories next Olympics.

There was a very good British mini series that aired in 1979 starring Anthony Andrews titled Danger UXB. Andrews played a British officer leading a team of sappers tasked with disarming and removing unexploded German bombs during the Blitz. Good stuff.
-
@Highlander They should make this an Olympic sport. Oh, wait...
-
@ttyymmnn Oh I never saw that. They have a bomb disposal police show in the UK called Trigger Point, we watched a couple of them but it's like an action junkie show and not really very good.

It's available on Acorn TV, whatever the hell that is.
-
@Cé-hé-sin I don't know about the long Poles, but apparently a regular size Ukranian works pretty well.
-
-
@ttyymmnn Oh that's the UK TV in the USA channel I think.
