SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) — The pilots on a Delta Air Lines flight from Salt Lake City to Washington, D.C. decided to bring their jet down in Denver after the cockpit windshield shattered above 30,000 feet. The crew repeatedly told passengers to remain calm until they landed.
The safety glass did its job, looks like.

@Rusty-Vandura my coworkers were on that flight. I'll be spending the week with them here, I'll ask about it. I knew it happened but don't have details yet.
Edit: ha! It was one of our docs that took that picture. Kirk Knowlton.

@Rusty-Vandura Airliner windows have multiple layers, and although this looks bad, it's not that big of a deal. Some fail modes don't require a descent.
I had one or two go over the years -

We were on a Christmastime flight around 15 years ago -- MD-80 -- that had engine stalls at cruise and we made an emergency landing in Texarkana, of all places. Full autobrake -- pretty dramatic. The airline ordered an epic stack of Domino's pizzas whilst they found hotel rooms for all of us. My daughter also came down with a painful ear infection that same night, our meds and spare diapers were all in checked luggage that missed the flight... No more flying at Chistmastime.
ANYWAYs, it was fun talking with the pilots about it afterward. The caption was an experienced pilot and it was the only engine fail of his entire career to that point.

I had one or two go over the yearsYou're an airline pilot also? I also assumed that this wasn't such a big deal, though there was the story of the British pilot who got sucked out the window and people had to hold onto his legs until they could land.

@Rusty-Vandura I like that it's worded like they did it on a lark; they "decided" to bring it down, y'know, like the captain wanted to get out and stretch his legs.
-
@drVanTraveler Would you say that was a structural failure rather than a strike of some sort?

Yes, probably some hidden defect in one layer. One minute it's perfect, then it just goes. Gets your attention.
Not much chance for a strike at cruise. -

Yes. The reporter sounds like a complete moron.
