Crack pipe or crack pipe?
-
Yes, it's in great condition. Yes, it's got one of the better engines. Yes, it's an uncommon and distinctive ride. No, it's not worth $15k. Also it's beige on beige, probably the most boring color combo there is.
-
@EssExTee This year? Probably NP. Sorry....
-
@EssExTee the market IS insane right now...
-
@bbg2d I could see price that for a V8 or AMG but not for a run-of-the-mill E-Class.
-
@EssExTee You're right, it's not worth 15k. It's probably worth more.
-
@EssExTee Looks well cared for. Mercedes convertibles hold their values.
-
@EssExTee I LOVE beige
-
@EssExTee these trade for that all the time. Just beware of the wiring harness.
Back in the day these were ~80K
-
@fintail And from what I remember reading, water would get into certain areas underneath the top and rust inside out.
-
-
@krustywantout I wasn't aware of that, but haven't studied these closely. It wouldn't surprise me, especially at the A-pillar. Any soft top car needs to be kept relatively dry.
-
@e90m3 I want to say 92-96 is the timeframe.
-
@fintail I always thought it was later than that, but you'd know better than I would.
-
@EssExTee seriously I know how oppo is with 100k+ miles on cars but in my experience most people don't maintain their cars enough for that to be ever worth it.
-
@MybirdIStheword In general cars with 100k+ miles can be ok, so long as the person maintaining them intends on keeping them. But those aren't the ones for sale, are they?
-
@e90m3 I'm pretty sure it's no later than 97. 97 and later 129s and 140s are more desirable than earlier cars partly because of this.
-
@EssExTee Seems high to me, but it's also a pretty clean looking classic, and convertibles are always nice, especially in vacation spots. I don't think it's as overpriced as you think.
I'd still prefer an XK or Boxster if I were spending that sort of money on an old convertible.
-
What if I really, really don't want an SL?
-
@EssExTee Jeeze one near me just sold for like $5,000
-
@ForSweden SLK. Or CLK.
-
@EssExTee I have a strong, learned disdain for 124's and convertibles, but this is a lot closer to NP than CP. If it's clean enough and everything works, could be possible to flip for an instant profit. People love these for some reason.
-
@EssExTee
To me, it's good at about half that. -
@AMGtech I clearly recall when these were launched - they were meant to be something limited production and tasteful, a "modern classic" of sorts along the line of thought of the late run W111 cabrios. At 80K in 1992 dollars, they cost as much as a new S-class - if MB tried to launch an E-based cabrio for 120K today, the market wouldn't react kindly.
-
@fintail Is the back seat usable to adults in the convertible? If so I can see the appeal for someone who wants a couple night out vs. a date night or on the prowl Mercedes.
-
@glemon Yep, although not exactly limo-like, a couple of adults could fit. It's effectively a chopped 300CE, I don't think passenger room was impacted much.
