That was depressing...

So remember I was debating how far to tear into my motor for an ongoing oil leak? https://opposite-lock.com/topic/41225/how-to-go-about-this/6
Well, after a run to pickup our meat, my small leak turned into a full on gush, losing 4 qts over a 60 mile drive. Of course this gave me a big clue it was more than the intake gasket I already ordered, so I stopped and grabbed some dye, pressure washed the entire engine/engine bay, and set to finding exactly where the leak was.
What I found means more work than I actually want to do.
Turns out the front head gasket is blown on one of these oil ports:
On top of that, the timing cover is also blown out just above the oil pan.So apparently I get to do head gaskets and a timing cover, neither of which are anything I actually want to do. Thanks Chrysler PCV systems......
Welp, fire the cannon:

@Long_Voyager94 An upvote seems like a poor consolation prize but you always surprise us with how quickly you get these things done.
-
@Long_Voyager94 at least you got a $4.79 discount on the parts amirite?
-
@WhoIsTheLeader Mostly just pisses me off because I just rebuilt this entire engine not even 2 years ago, then a failed PCV smokes half it's gaskets from over pressurizing the crankcase.
-
@Long_Voyager94 Those oil passages are pressurized on their own, not subject to crankcase pressure. Be sure to check block and heads for straightness while you've got it apart.
Guess they didn't oil thru the pushrods like I thought.
-
@Long_Voyager94 that sucks.
-
@Old-Busted-Hotness The heads will be coming into work and getting milled when I get them off.
I intend to do some porting on them as well, along with installing new valve stem seals. -
@Long_Voyager94 $131 is more parts water pistol than parts cannon. 4 quarts out of a blown gasket in 60 miles is a lot! Glad you caught it in time.
-
@Long_Voyager94 F.
Reminds me of an ongoing debate I have with a buddy. “Is a leaking head gasket blown?” I say if coolant and oil aren’t going into each others’ places or the cylinders, and just exiting at the head gasket, it’s leaky, not blown
-
@Sovande It's a load of parts, I just have the benefit of parts being obnoxiously cheap
I'd have probably just threw in the towel had it ran out of oil before I noticed. Thankfully the smell of burning oil was a giveaway something was up, it was only down a qt when I pulled into the first gas station. I bought 5 qts while I was there, then pulled off and checked/filled every 10-15 miles to get it home.
-
@Qaaaaa I mean this is just exiting at the gasket, but I would call it blown.
Before this when it was only losing 1/2qt-1qt, it was leaky.I guess I've always called it blown, regardless. I've never actually lost a HG that leaked across and mixed, all of mine have either:
A. Blown into a cooling port so the exhaust pressurizes the cooling system.
B. Blown out a cooling port so coolant leaks down the outside of the engine.
C. Blown an oil port so oil leaks out. -
This really has me on the fence about just saying to hell with it and letting it go.
I'm still really debating going and getting that other 94 I found down in Ohio. Buy it, leave it stock, enjoy driving it. -
@WhoIsTheLeader He already posted that engine was rebuilt, transmission rebuilt. Frame welded up. New paint on truck. Just putting second coat of wax on right now.
-
@partypooper2012 Well the engine was rebuilt, the transmission was built, and the body was welded up, along with fresh paint, and I did just wax it last weekend so.......
-
@Long_Voyager94 We..... know..... we all know!!!
My friends invented a term - antishining. That's where one does something that makes other people look inferior - friend visits your house and sweeps your driveway (for example). Your wife is in awe... you say - dude, you're antishining me.
You're antishining us....
-
@Long_Voyager94 Where in Ohio? If it’s nearby I’m willing to go check it out for you.
-
@Long_Voyager94 Good thing the wife didnt let you get new wheels
Gotta fix whats important first
Thats for a set of head gaskets or one?

These guys have it: https://powerautobrokers.com/vehicle.php?id=718&vehicle=1994-DODGE-CARAVAN-SE-For-Sale-Cleveland-Ohio&fbclid=IwAR33yPO4J_zJn0cMgif4rPb7ZwE45oTdqOYUSZHnBsTuk2ZlS6uBuicd9Gc
From the pictures they have it looks absolutely pristine.@Brickman said in That was depressing...:

That's for the complete HG set.
-
@Long_Voyager94 I remember you sharing that one now. It does look clean.
Unfortunately it’s about 3hrs from me. -
@kiltedpadre About 5 hours closer than it is for me
-
Puzzle me this, if this leakage is due to a plugged PCV, then the cause was that blowby pressurized the crankcase to maybe 20 PSI and then seals not used to that pressure started leaking. Sooooo what happens when you loosen the oil cap so it can't build pressure? Does the leak go away?
My guess it will revert to a seep unless it blew out a O ring or something.
-
@RacinBob It pushed the gasket out, so now oil is just free to go out where the seal no longer exists.

Hmmm, so you saw the protruding gasket? I ask because a head gasket is pretty stout.....
-
@RacinBob See the gasket itself, no. See the oil running out from under the head, yes.
The timing gasket can actually be seen where it pushed it out. -
@Long_Voyager94 Do it sounds like the timing cover gasket has to be replaced. I guess my question is, if you take away the excess pressure, will the head gasket still leak? Or will it just seep a little.
