A little bit of head work
-
I tore down a 9a (2.0 16v 220mm block VW motor) I picked up a year or so ago. Many… interesting mysteries unravelled themselves, including oil in a color I’d never seen.
Here’s the head, torn down to a casting plus valve guides.
Here’s pistons I can’t actually use, since they’re an overbore and I’ll be using a virgin block. Nevermind that they’re high comp, something like 12:1.
My valvetrain, with 16 never run lifters! And… two hog ass cams.
Those ports appear to be… very far from stock. So, to recap. $650 of piston, $300 of block work, $350 of cam, $175 of lifter. So, probably like $1475 minimum in just hard parts went into this motor, not counting the main bearing cap ARP studs, snazzy red paint job, or what appear to be aftermarket valve springs. Somebody was going to spin to 8500 rpm and make like 200 NA horsepower. And then just abandoned it in their buddy’s shop. Who then sold it, plus a spare ABA bottom end (the other half to the upcoming motor), plus three more 16v heads in varying completeness, for a whopping $400, delivered an hour away from said shop.
