What's the best type of lighting switch?
-
And why is it this kind?
-
@EssExTee automatic lights
-
-
@EssExTee He's right and you secretly know it.
-
@HammerheadFistpunch @ForSweden all headlights are automatic. When it starts getting dark I automatically put the headlights on
-
I wanna feel like I'm firing a missile every time I turn on aux lights.
-
-
@CarsOfFortLangley the switches on MINIs are like that, minus the red safety cover. So fucking satisfying
-
-
@EssExTee Gotta love the push/pull headlamp knob. Putting those controls on a stalk just never felt right to me. It's not exactly the kind of feature that you really need the controls to be literally right there at your fingertips while driving. In fact, come to think of it, I use the headlamp switch about as often as I use the ignition key switch: turn it on just once per drive, and turn it back off at the end. The dashboard is a good place for that sort of thing.
-
@Urambo-Tauro I like how it neatly integrates headlamps and the dimmer into one control.
-
@EssExTee And a floor mounted dimmer switch to go with it!
-
@EssExTee Yes! I also like the dial versions, but bonus points to the knob for integrating those interior lighting controls so elegantly!

Except for the MINI toggle switches having a central return position that they toggle from vs. the more satisfying click-clack of either up or down positions. But they are still pretty good.

Just no. On slightly dreary days the number of cars with 'automatic lights' I see driving down the road with their lights turning on and off and on and off drives me bonkers. Because it's JUST on the cusp where the light sensor thinks the lights should be on....or off....or on....or off.
If a human being can't flick a switch because they realize it's getting darker outside and flick that same switch when it's less dark, something is wrong.
-
@RallyDarkstrike how about automatic as in automatically on all the time without the option for being turned off
-
@EssExTee Being more serious for a brief moment, I like that kind of switch, but I think it's not really because I like the switch. I think it's because in the days when I remember that type of headlight switch being common it wasn't just common, it was almost universal. Almost every car I saw had the same type of switch, it was in about the same spot, they all had a floor-mounted high beam switch in about the same spot, and the windshield wiper/washer control was always right under the headlights. Today, I have to look around to find all of those controls in every car.
-
Nope...all kneel to the king of headlight control.

I would be fine with that more than automatic sensor-activated that turn on and off
-
@Cash-Rewards we test drove a Few Minis years ago. My wife hated those switches. I was all over them. Flick flickity flick flick. So good
-
@EssExTee
I’m kind of partial to what makes a good lighting switch. -
@EssExTee Eagle and Rampage both have a pull knob. Growing up with Japanese imports I hated these switches. I like them now.
-
-
@AestheticsInMotion Our volvo has that and it's the best way. I turn on all lights in any car I drive as soon as I start it.
-
@ibRAD I used to be team "give the driver all the control for all the things" but I've lost faith in that method. Around here even the cops drive around without lights on in rainstorms, to say nothing of the people with DRL's on and nothing else.
