Does anyone know what kind steel chevy uses in their frames? all ive found is their website saying "high strength steel" which puts it between 30 and 80 ksi yield strength. I need the information for a strength of materials project, which i can post the results of later.

Hey I know this! I can finally use my materials degree for something. Chassis steels are typically low carbon steels, each OEM will probably have its own alloy or variation, and there are possibly different alloys used on different parts of the frame, but here are a couple I could find by searching Ford and GMs steel standard names. You can probably find more alloys in the carbon steel families by clicking around on steel sites.

          Possibly GM?: https://www.steelestores.com/grade/gm-gmw2m-st-s-hr2-gmw2.html#mechanical

          Possibly Ford?: http://steel-coils-sheets.mststeel.com/viewitems/ford-electro-galvanized-steel/345-a-electro-galvanized-cr-based-low-carbon-steel

@bandit Awesome, thats super helpful. However that steel comes out to 92 ksi, which i think is too strong? I know they call it 'super high strength steel, were they using that on frames in 2008? Who knows?

@shoop Pretty sure I've seen steels that can do 200-300ksi yield for aerospace. So 90 ksi isn't outrageous for something considered "high strength".
