Stimulating checks round two...
-
Looks like the US is going to issue $600/tax paying person and $600/ dependent. They are also going to extend unemployment benefits. I’ve been lucky and gainfully employed all year. I really hope it helps those struggling right now.
-
@highlander based on last "stimulus" math I should get about $150 lol but I donated the last one and will do again.
-
Nice of them to give us our own money lol. I never did get my check first time.
️ Oh well someone is probably a bit richer now.
-
@maximaspeed what the, why all the extra symbols?
-
Thankfully I'm not a position where I desperately need the money. Will either donate it to a local charity or to a medical charity.
-
@maximaspeed Sounds like something somewhere isn't handling the zero-width joiner.
(Emoji are often made up of multiple characters - like, gender and skin tone are modifiers on an emoji.)
-
@Highlander for a lot of people these can't come fast enough. @MaximaSpeed I know that a lot of people that didn't file taxes last year or filed late didn't end up getting a check as the government was using the 2019 IRS returns list. Might be worth checking into whether you can get yourself added somehow. Of course the cynic in me doubts its possible...
-
@highlander has anyone talked about the cutoffs for this round? I think the last one was $75k for the full amount and a decreasing payment up to $95k.
-
@highlander Nice that they finally got a deal. Unfortunately to get the money for the stimulus checks while still keep it under the $1T limit the GOP was insisting on, they cut most of the money for state and local governments, which are also really hurting right now, which will no doubt lead to drastic cuts in services for the people who need them most. Still better than the GOP's previous offer which was to do the stimulus checks instead of the expanded unemployment benefit.
-
Yay a threadbare stimulus that as a function of GDP pales in comparison to other wealthy nations. More of that bootstrapping build it yourself exceptionalism from people who are now suddenly afraid of deficits after embracing them in the defective 2017 tax plan.
-
@highlander My wife and I both work and have so far been able to have friends and family watch our kids. If we had to pay for child care, neither stimuli would have done much at all. Neither replaced the lost income from my wife’s side gigs. I couldn’t imagine these helping at all if we were out of work. The social contract is looking pretty bullshit from my POV.

In BC, our “stimulus” cheques are based on your 2019 taxable income, with a sliding scale up to $75k income.
How does that help direct tax dollars to people that were actually affected by the pandemic? Good question. -

@bandit Similar cut off as last go around but I can't find any specifics.
-
@maximaspeed On the hyphen the man shrugging emoji shows as a woman shrugging + male symbol because there's no man shrugging emoji in the hyphen's emoji library.
-
@Highlander Shouldn't this be in the perlatocks section?
-
Probably.
-
Done. Carry on
-
@bandit Last I heard, it was the same. 75k for single, 150k for couples, decreasing to zero at 100k and 200k, respectively.
I am frustrated that it's such a tiny amount to people and so much to all these big businesses. I'd rather see it go heavily to UI and people, since people that are hurting will spend the money and UI will help support those that lost jobs.
At least it has shown the gaping hole in the safety net created by all this gig work.
-
@eric Project Veritas got more than half a million in PPP funds, while a robust UI system is considered "socialism" or something similar. Makes me ill.
Safety net? Are you a commie?
-
$600 you say... @fintail
-
@highlander was hoping to get a little more for my winter rim fund...

Similar cutoffs to last time, just a smaller check.
-
@aestheticsinmotion I saw a similar gag somewhere, along the lines of "I wonder how much it costs to build a guillotine".
-
@fintail That other thread where we got scolded because that guy left, I haven't taken the time to read what was written, but I can't imagine it was worth quitting over. Too bad, wutevs.
