Daily Camero Bullshittery: Rally Sport

I bought a bunch of plastidip a while back with the intention of doing the C70 Zeus wheels Id put on the 850, but I never got around to it. Then I picked up a set of Monte Titano wheels for the Camaro, with a set of Pirelli Sottozero tires, for winter use.
The car is blue. Id like to preserve my winter wheels. I have gold plastidip on hand. I think you can see where this is going.
Sadly no mounted shots because the car is still in the shop waiting on parts. But once I get it back I will definitely get some pics on here.
This was my first real plastidip project and a learning experience for me. One cool trick I learned was to wedge index cards between wheel lip and tire to prevent overspray on the tire. Plastidip is pretty thick and controllable so you don't have to worry too much about overspray if you're careful.
One of the fun things you can do with plastidip is layer it to create effects. In this case I started with several coats of flat black as a base. Then I laid down 2 coats of Bright Gold. Bright Gold is a pigmented metallic, meaning it has paint color particles and metallic particles in it. Depite the name, over a black base it gives a more muted, darker gold color. But over that I layered Gold Metalizer, which is essentially a clear coat packed with only gold metallics. It really brightens up the "bright" gold and gives it more sparkle. I finished it off with a glossy clear coat with UV protectant.
For what its worth this is a 5 foot job. They are winter wheels so Im not overly concerned about them being perfect. Also I did it in my garage, not a clean paint booth. Finally, I historically suck at painting things. I was at home in the Navy because all I had to do was slather Haze Gray on everything and it was good. But Im learning and getting better, and while I have a few flaws this is overall an improvement for me. I'll call that a win.
If you really want to get crazy with plastidip, I recommend you check out Dip Your Car. I have some crazy ideas for the Jankvagen one day.

It’s basically a Subaru 222B now with the blue/gold. I support this!
-
Those look good. I'm trying to decide what color to paint the V60 wheels and gold is on the list of possibilities.
-
@sovande Well if you're undecided, try some plastidip and see what you think, if you don't like it you can peel it right off.
-
@snuze that's the plan. I just can't decide on color. Gold? Bronze? Silver? Too many choices.
-
@snuze looks great.
-
Those look very good!

Thanks all. I went out this morning and have one that has some bubbling. I need to figure out why and if/how I can fix it. My first thought is hair dryer, but I don't know.
-
-
@snuze I can't do white.
-
@sovande I figured, I was just trying to be ridiculous. This morning I checked and one of my wheels bubbled up. One of the downfalls of PlastiDip is its hard to correct errors, so I ended up peeling it and starting over.
-
@snuze I need someone with photoshop skills. I actually have an old high school friend who paints cars and whose shop is about 5 blocks away. He is going to paint the El Camino for me and I'm sure he'd spray some wheels for me too. His cousin owns the tire shop I use all the time so it would be cheap. I just can't decide what would best compliment the black/brown bronze of my car.
I bet you're looking forward to getting your car back.
-
@sovande Thats awesome that you have those connections. I used to have a really great body & paint guy, he was a good friend of my fathers, but a couple years ago he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.
Im in the process of redipping one wheel. It had some adhesion problems, big bubbles, and I couldn't fix them, so I'm going to try again.
Also yes, I am missing my Camaro quite a bit.
-
Man, you went all in on the dip.
I would have just done 3 or 4 coats of gold and called it a day. Looks great though, can't wait to see it on the mullet machine.
