I learned a thing today, which I guess isn't exactly news to me but was not front of mind: cars are often shipped without their final wheels, to avoid scuffs in transport. Usually they get steelies but Cadillacs are starting to get red alloys.

      https://www.motor1.com/news/461272/cadillac-explains-transit-wheels-red/

Supposedly the wheels are red to discourage owners from leaving the dealership with them mistakenly left on the car during PDI. But I have a feeling we may just see a few sets out in the wild. I can't imagine why I have this premonition.

Now all they need to start shipping Cadillacs with is some good interiors and better engines, preferably V8.

@texturedsoyprotein I wonder if they're DOT approved. Seems like there's no need for that, unless they start selling them.

                    We apologize for the inconvenience.

@snuze Id be eyeballing them but let's be real, snagging a 2010-14 example is more my non existent budget. They have a really appealing exterior design, that's 70% of thr purchase criteria after transmission options

@rider The proper hotrod versions are on the way. GM just totally botched the rollout of the new Blackwing branding of those cars by demoting V to the V-Sport level and not doing a good job of explaining the change or that the proper hotrods are on the way.

Everybody sees that V badge and knows what past Vs are and these are not that, and this is all that's available at the moment so everybody's all robble robble you fucked up V!

The stupidly named CT4- and CT5-V Blackwing (because Blackwing can't be its own brand it has to be V Blackwing 🙄) are likely getting updated versions of the motors from the ATS- and CTS-V.

@snuze Right I'm just playing along with the joke and even if those are promising everybody's buying crossovers not sedans. Also see above...

Seems like a bad joke, putting temporary wheels that can't be re-used or sold as is just for transport...

Can't they just adjust the transport procedure to avoid risks to wheels or design a simple plastic (or whatever) cover that goes over the wheels and would be cheaper and not require to swap/store wheels (and possibly tires).

                              @texturedsoyprotein Good point.

If the V Blackwings were out Id have at least given them a look before I bought my Camaro, though I'd want the V8 car, which I think would mean the CT5 version, and I have a feeling it would have easily been at least 10k over what I paid for the Camaro.

@jb-boin I clicked thru to the original Cadillac Society post this Motor1 was referencing.

                                https://cadillacsociety.com/2020/12/18/placeholder-cadillac-wheels-are-very-red-for-a-very-good-reason/

Apparently the dealers ship the shipping wheels back to the factory and they're reused on more than one car. I don't know if they're shipped back on a truck that's going back anyway or if GM is doing extra return shipping on them.

Also the fan blade ones on the ATS CT4 are kinda awesome.

@texturedsoyprotein it's a lot of energy and time spent for something that seems useless 🙂

They could simply use wheels that could be sold as winter sets or only swap wheels if they get damaged.

Why don't they just use cheap donuts? They also come in brite colors 🤔 🙃

@jb-boin It's my understanding this is common practice for cars in general and the only difference is Cadillac is using red alloys instead of steelies. 🤔

Not something I actively bothered to make note of as I observed it but I have sorta kinda perfect recall and I can definitely picture many car carrier trucks I've driven past where the cars have steelies covered in plastic wrap.

I’ve seen GM do this on the new trucks. The wheels are smaller and skinnier than stock wheels as well.

@texturedsoyprotein Oh, I know that the fast Cadillacs are still coming, but I also think the "normal" engines are a little lacking. And they destroyed a decade's worth of V-branding that they have built up- that was a very stupid move, right on par for GM. Blackwing should either be its own thing, or V Sport should be what V is now; they don't need 5 different performance variants under the "V Blackwing".

@texturedsoyprotein never saw that here (but often saw protections on body panels) and could not find any picture on Google matching that here.
I also don't see why wheels would be especially at risk during transport.

Here is what new cars look like around here :

@rider I think viewed on their own without the context of previous V models, the current V (Sport) models are kinda interesting. Especially the CT4.

The CT5-V is either a cut rate attempt to compete against stuff like the 540i, E450 & A6 55, or more space for the money vs the M340i, C43 & S4. The motor isn't as strong as the BMW & Benz, the interior isn't as nice as any of them, and I despise the C-pillar, but the standard magride and eLSD are interesting. And it starts at $48k when those other midsizers are all pushing $60k.

The CT4-V is competing on price against stuff like the M235i GC, A35 & S3, but offers a proper rwd layout like the 340i & C43. The 2.7T truck motor is a weird choice but it's a good amount of grunt for the money. Optioned like for like, it's 330i/C300/A4 45 money for a lot more performance than those models. The chassis is great and there's no infuriating styling fail like the CT5.
