Two hours on the trainer. I'm eating low carb these days to shed some weight over the holidays. Two hours, zero carbs. It's a looooong two hours. I did manage a 1250watt sprint at the end for 3 whole seconds.

Plan is to lose 50 (yes fifty) pounds and race cyclocross next fall.

Anywhoo - here's the whip (old Specialized Allez steel bike with Ultegra 10 speed). It's actually pretty quick for a steel bike.

Two hours indoors is amazing. What's on the big TV to keep you occupied?

I went Mediterranean/low carb to control pre-diabetes. I didn't want to lose weight but it happened anyway.

@vincentmalamute I have a collection of Spinervals videos (https://www.spinervals.com/) to keep me motivated.

I need someone telling me what do and when. If left to my own devices I would try to watch an old 80's movie and bail after 20 mins. I'd rather watch a video of a room full of other cyclists suffering than anything else when I ride indoors.

EDIT - Great job on the low carb. Is your diabetes under control? I've heard low carb/non-processed food can really help pre-diabetes. My Dad is prediabetic and I mentioned low cab and he just looked at me like I was an alien.

@lokerola That's exactly what I do! Watch anime/TV and bail after 20 minutes. I'll look into the free Spinervals and see if that helps. I really need to exercise indoors now that it's cold.

I got to within 1 point of diabetes and it turned around with Medit/low carb. I had a terrible diet with a huge sweet tooth so it was a drastic change. Blood sugars are high normal now.

I see all the terrible complications of diabetes in my job so I was thoroughly scared/motivated. Can't help your dad if he doesn't appreciate the seriousness of diabetes. That's too bad.

I love the Spinervals stuff! Great indoor training years before Peleton. I recommend their Aero Base Builder videos. I've put many hours into Aero Base Builder 1 and IV. It's not free though. I own a bunch of DVDs, but you can stream their collection for 12 or 14 bucks a month. I just like the good old fashion DVD. I don't have to worry about streaming, wifi connection in my home gym, etc. Just chuck in a DVD and go.

Glad to hear the diet is working out for you!

@lokerola I snapped the clutch cable on my motorcycle today and walked it two miles back home. Worked up a bit of a sweat.

@lokerola I see they have a 30 day trial. I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

Two hours is pretty brutal. I'm struggling with mine, but I figure the only thing to do is to stay with it.

@lokerola Are you powering your tv with it? Seems like it could be motivating: The only way to see your motivating video is to ride hard enough to keep the tv running...

                        Great job!

The only way I’ve found to stay on the bike indoors is Zwift. It’s a lot more entertaining and competitive to me.

Never discount the possibility that you might live through it.

                          @lokerola damn.

                          • Good on ya, in general
                          • Good on ya for doing low carb during the holidays (I’ll bat starting that after New Years)
*Good on ya for two hours (!) indoors! I can tolerate maybe 15 mins in any cardio machine (outdoors is much better, but I figure you have some weather related restrictions)

That’s a nice bike. Steel is probably “slower” in that racing realm, vs carbon. For everyone that doesn’t race, steel is just fine (preferable, IMO)

@lokerola Folks feel that way about low carb because they think of Atkins “all you can meat” diet. I now say I’m just cutting out the crap: bread, pasta, rice, chips, cookies, beer....and there’s goes breakfast...

Also, is your seat post OK? Looks like it’s angling backwards.

Mediterranean Diet is usually recognized as vegetables, fish, complex carbs, olive oil. With high cholesterol on top of rising blood sugars, I now skip any added oil. I just throw a lot of vegetables together with a piece of salmon, bake them since I don't like vegetables. I keep the complex carbs on a low level too. Not that tasty.
