Seeking Laptops, Tablets, Phones for Schoolkids in El Salvador
Rusty Vandura last edited by Rusty Vandura
I have been sending gear down to Arce in El Salvador and Guatemala City so some kids can use them for school. I have a friend there who distributes the items to schoolkids in rural communities. Do you have anything you would like to send along? Really, anything with a screen and a camera.
A laptop or MacBook (i5 or better)?
iPhone 7 or iPhone 8?
Earlier generation iPad or iPad Mini?
An acquaintance is scheduled to travel to Arce mid-January and will serve as my mule. If you have one of these items you'd like to include, ping me and we'll work out the logistics.
Also, if you feel so inclined, I have information where you can sponsor the school fees, about $50/mo/child. My friend is interested in the kids striking up relationships with people here.
I've sent down a number of items already and will be sending another laptop. I like to make sure the laptops have fresh batteries and devices have the necessary cables and chargers.
Thanks! Ping me!

If I was closer to you and had any extra tech or money, I would, but alas

@rusty-vandura This is a bit of a tangent, but any reason for the i5 requirement? Plenty of i3 machines are going to be fast enough for most things (hell my personal laptop has a 900mhz m3 processor). Meanwhile the whole i3/5/7/9 designation has been around forever, so really doesn't tell you much about the relative strength of a processor anyway. In a lot of ways the processor is going to be the least important aspect of the machine unless they are doing scientific computing, or compiling large programs. An SSD, a decent amount of RAM, a battery that still holds a charge, and a screen that isn't 1366x768 are all going to be more important to usability than the processor (exception: you probably don't want any ARM processors, except for Apple's new stuff, and I doubt those are on offer).
In any event, my equipment reserves are unfortunately depleted so I don't think I have anything I could send you. I have an old MacBook Pro here, but it's not mine to give away, and even if I could it's too old for software updates, which means I couldn't recommend anyone using it (I've tried booting Linux on it, but while it loads from a live USB just fine, but if I actually install Ubuntu, it fails horribly with some graphics driver related freak out).
Regardless, good luck with your collecting!

@facw I inherited some 128GB SSDs that really breathe life into a computer.

@Rusty-Vandura Yeah, SSDs make a huge difference, and I'm sure those will be a welcome upgrade. If you need more of those for this endeavor, I do have 120 and 240GB SSDs both of which are gather dust, so I could clean them off and send them, though honestly they are probably barely worth the postage to California these days.
