There haven't been very many GMRS radios available. Two or three handhelds, and a few more mobile units. Repeaters are also effectively nonexistent, based on the last time I looked.

Buy Two Way Radios and Wouxun have collaborated to address that.

For some time now (perhaps a year, based on reviews on the site) there's been a handheld radio from Wouxun; as of this week there's now a mobile unit that can be paired to create a repeater.

      Mobile: https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-kg-1000g.html

Update: There's also a Bluetooth microphone that Wouxun offers that will work with the mobile unit: https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-mmo-004bt.html

The price is significantly more than the Midland MicroMobile units, but the feature set is correspondingly larger. The video is a pretty good introduction.

      On walkabout. Back soonish.

GMRS seems like the sweet spot in overland comms but repeater support seems weak and cost is high. Most importantly, no one I know uses it outside of backup blister packs. We still use cb, which sucks but does work for the most part

@hammerheadfistpunch Yeah, looking at what it would cost to pair those up without using two very distant antennas, I guess it’d be about $1k plus the radios.

          On walkabout. Back soonish.

I know GMRS seems to be growing in popularity with my local group, but it seems like they're mostly ham users like myself.

@benjrblant It's really nice having FRS as a license-free, cheap supplement to GMRS. Maybe amateur radio should have had a FRS-like option all along.

              On walkabout. Back soonish.
