What's in your trunk?
-
Winter is upon (most of) us, and as evidenced by recent near-tragedies from Japan and New York, keeping supplies for emergencies isn't a bad idea.
My current winter supplies status is a bit jumbled because I keep swapping my Jeeps in and out of a nearby AAMCO (don't ask) but what do you take with you when you leave the house?
-
I keep some extra fluids, jump cables, and a small hand tool set in the trunk. If I need more than that, I may as well call a tow.
-
Pickup has fuses and bulbs, jumper cables, tire iron, and a screwdriver.
Lexus has blankets and some tools in the spare tire well that I've used in a friend's car somehow.
-
@just-jeepin In terms of things that would actually be useful (as opposed to stuff I'm just storing there and/or have been too lazy to take out):
- First aid kit (with Mylar blanket)
- Collapsible shovel
- Old winter jacket
- Gloves
- Hat
- Tire pump
- Jumper cables
- Battery powered jumper/USB charger (actually under my armrest)
- Scraper/brush (actually in the back seat)
Anyway, not too bad I don't think, but I should get an illuminated/reflective triangle or something.
-
Air compressor and a breaker bar.
I bring a booster pack, folding shovel, snow brush, and gloves if I'm going far from home.
-
@just-jeepin In my daily for winter I keep a backpack filled with some old milsurp cold weather gear, hand warmers, and bottled water. Year round I keep a tow strap, jumper cables, mechanic gloves, a cigarette lighter powered tire pump, and ratchet straps under the rear seats.
In the Trans Am I keep a smattering of tools in an old 50 cal ammo box. Small hammer, a 12 point 3/8” imperial socket set, a wire brush, crescent wrench, channel locks, vise grips, needle nose pliers, a couple feet of wire, electrical tape, gorilla tape, a pack of fuses, some hose clamps, a handful of common size nuts and bolts, a Stanley knife, mechanics gloves, a headlamp, and $20 cash. I also always have a quart of oil, a gallon of coolant, and jumper cables just in case. Pretty much everything needed to put something on that fell off or something to limp to the nearest interstate exit. No spare tire or jack though so that’s what road side assistance is for.
-
I don't change out contents for the seasons. It's the same supplies year round.
-
Jumper cables
-
Folding shovel (It's an old army shovel issued to my grandfather in WWII.)
-
First aid kit
-
Snow scraper and brush
-
Two 12-ounce bottles of water
-
Small tool kit
-
Spare bulbs and fuses
-
Tire pressure gauge

Nylon rope

@just-jeepin Waiting to see what the Camero guys say...
-
@just-jeepin Okay, for real, jumper cables, portable tire inflator, a FULL SPARE tire, the shockingly complete first aid kit I posted about last summer, and a black and decker dust-buster with 12V cord someone got ages ago.
-
I don't have any winter things since I don't live in a wintery place, however, I do have jumper cables, a jacket, blanket, some magazines, a beach chair, and How To Drive by the Stig... all of which is stowed where a spare tire should be, but isn't.
-
i dont have a trunk...sooo..ill just replace that with backpack and pockets as i never leave the house without those
backpack : heavy bike lock, bottle of water, paracetamol and my dinky first aid/repair kit containing some plasters, bandages and a little bottle of iodine/ multi tool of allen keys,a flathead and a philips screwdriver and a puncture repair kitpockets : keys, phone, cigarrettes and a boxcutter....usually
oh and my pin card
(thats more my always setup than my winter setup tho) -
Wagon: cleaning supplies (fluids/towels), ice scraper, duster, fire extinguisher, twine/rope.
Fintail: toolbox with many tools, extra engine fluids, fire extinguisher, old car cover, spare tire, jumper cables (I think they are there and not in the wagon).
If I am going on a long trip in either I might bring a few extra supplies.
-
Snow brush, tire repair kit, that's about it. Used to carry extra washer fluid but I still have the jug from quite a few years back. I don't drive far enough to the point it gets topped up already at the mechanic.
-
Ammo box full of tools (if I need more than basic stuff, I've got my phone), a real jack (car came with a bumper jack that I refuse to even contemplate), full-size spare, breaker bar, fuses/bulbs, gloves, towel (there's a frood who knows where his towel is), fire extinguisher, jumper cables, snow brush and 20 cubic feet of air. Also a foam pad to kneel on if needed.
-
No trunk, because I drive a pickup:
These are not my winter items, I carry them all year long:
Tow straps
Spare wiper blades
Mylar blankets
Compact shovel
2 Snowbrush/scrapers
Jumper cables
2 Reflective vests
Rechargeable Led Flashlight
Led Triangle light
4 way folding lug wrench
Tire plug kit
Spare bulbs and fuses
Jackstand/hydraulic jack combo
Set of cheap box/open wrenches
Multi-tool
Mechanix gloves
Latex gloves
USB cables for phone and LED Flashlight
Full size spare with pressure checked at oil change intervals
AAA cardWinter add-ons may include:
Extra gloves/ hat/ jacket
Snacks/ drink
Sand
2 LED Head lights -
Tire sealant and air compressor
Some girl's scarf that has been the trunk of my car for years, I have no idea whose it is
Basic tool kit
Jumper cables
Snow brush
Small shovelProbably wouldn't be a bad idea to have a small emergency kit but I so rarely leave the city that I doubt I'd need the type of supplies that I'd want to carry if I were frequently travelling in rural areas with weak or no cell signal.
-
Hmm, come to think of it, the contents of my trunk might not be of much use in an emergency. All I have back there are my spare tire, and car cover.
I guess the car cover could double as a blanket in a pinch, but I'm hesitant to use the spacesaver spare. My current wheels are a different diameter than stock, and the spare might not clear the calipers since my brake upgrade. They might fit on the rear, but I fear the diameter discrepancy would wear out the diff clutches. -
I always keep the following in my 330:
- Simple tool kit (sockets + ratchet)
- Breaker bar + torque wrench
- Coil packs (thanks Bosch)
- Extra coolant and oil
- Jumper cables
- Shop towels
- Sun screen + bug repellent
I add a wool army blanket and extra set of gloves for winter just in case!
-
@just-jeepin the cruiser is ready to be lived out of for 2 out more days at any given time but the gx is usually pretty spare. I gotta get a basic kit together for it

- Taft's original bottle jack, which I have not try in a long time and has high probability of being seized due to rust.
- Tow straps.
- Jumper cable, important tools to have in hand when the Taft's battery is getting old and degraded.
- A Slot and a cross screw driver.
- Spare car battery terminal connectors.
- An umbrella.
- Feather duster and chamois cloth, which are essentials to clean the car quickly if needed.
-
@just-jeepin golf clubs (still
